WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of the 2021 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on a high note, gaining momentum for tomorrow's second and final day. The day concluded with the Mountain Hawks registering two bronze medals in the men's and women's 4x800. The men's team currently ranks third out of seven schools with 15 points, while the women are currently tied for fifth with five points. There are still a ton of points to win on Saturday for the Brown and White.

Going back to the closing parts of the first day, both of Lehigh's 4x800 relay team ignited the crowd with back-to-back impressive races. The men's team of Joseph Cranley, Brian Healy, Brandtson Duffie and Jacob Martinez combined to come in third with a time of 7:59.69. The third leg of the race saw Duffie really break it open for the Mountain Hawks, while Martinez was able to hold on for third. On the women's side, Lehigh's Hetty McMillan, Jade Sessions, Miranda Royds and Carly Friend captured bronze with a time of 9:09.30. McMillan paced the field after the first two laps giving Lehigh the lead, while Sessions maintained the lead through four laps. Late surges from Army and Navy were enough to pass the Mountain Hawks in the final laps.

Not only did Lehigh end with a bang but they started with a bang as well. Senior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum's late push in the final three laps of the 10K awarded him a silver medal (30:31.33). The entire field were in a pack for the majority of the race until the leaders broke away with seven laps left. Michael Mitchell and Brad DeMassa took seventh and eighth for the Mountain Hawks. Mitchell came in with a time of 30:57.36, while DeMassa registered a time of 30:58.08. Battling through injuries, Jamie Zamrin gutted out a time of 38:01.33.

In the field events, Riley LaRiviere and Anastasios Mouzakis put on a show in the hammer throw. LaRiviere placed fifth with a score of 55.14m, while Mouzakis finished ninth at 51.72m. The men weren't the only ones who were successful in the hammer throw, as senior Brittany Curtin (52.91m) and Teasha McKoy (48.89) placed sixth and 10th. The Brown and White also had major success in the javelin with Brianna Wanbaugh and Karina Roze. Wanbaugh's score of 40.78 earned the Mountain Hawks two points and a seventh-place finish, while Roze finished ninth at 38.77. In the heptathlon, Maddy Harding is currently in fifth through four events with a score of 2,902 points and only nine points away from third. Harding finished second in the 200m (26.10) and third in both the 100mH (14.88) and the shot put (10.57).  Bree Smentkowski is currently in eighth with 5,577 points. Smentkowski took fifth (10.38m) in the shot put and sixth (26.98) in the 200m
