Spring 2021 Lehigh Football Preview: Safeties
3/7/2021 12:25:00 PM | Football
As March begins Lehighsports.com will be taking a position-by-position look at the Lehigh football team, which will play a four-game Patriot League schedule in the spring of 2021. The Mountain Hawks, under the direction of second-year head coach Tom Gilmore, will open the 2021 spring season March 13 versus Holy Cross at Goodman Stadium.
We shift to the secondary and highlight the safeties.
Despite the loss of three-year captain and All-Patriot League performer Sam McCloskey, this should be a position of depth and strength for the Mountain Hawks.
Senior Divine Buckrham saw plenty of time in the safety rotation in 2019 and is primed for a bigger role both on the field, and off, where he serves as one of the team captains. Buckrham's signature moment from 2019 was his game-saving tackle at the one yard line on the final play of the game at Colgate.
Sophomore TyGee Leach moved into the starting lineup during the Patriot League season and played well, finishing with 33 tackles and three tackles for loss.
The third veteran safety is sophomore Mitchell Lawhead, who missed most of his freshman season due to injury but has impressed so far in preseason.
Five first-year Mountain Hawks have also been working at safety throughout camp: Devari Robinson, Spencer Roof, Donovan Thomas, Penn State transfer Corey Melzer and Gabe Caton.
