
Mountain Hawks total 16 wins at Lehigh Spring Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time in nearly two full years, the Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Goodman Track and Field Complex. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Mountain Hawks won a combined 16 events between the men's and women's side. The other schools that competed today in the Lehigh Spring Opener were Colgate, Lafayette, UMBC and Wagner.
Starting on the women's side, the ladies won 10 total events throughout the day. Starting in the field events, Teasha McKoy and Brittany Curtin both showed power for the Brown and White. McKoy won the shot put at 12.17m (39'11.25"), while Curtin took home the dub in the hammer throw at 51.10m (167'8"). With a score of 42.14m, Curtin also took second in the discus. Staying with the discus, Veronica Meyer took third at 41.05m.
In the javelin, Karina Roze secured the win with a throw of 42.07m (138'0"), while Brianna Wanbaugh finished second at 38.52m. Kerry Perna registered her first-career collegiate outdoors win in the high jump. The freshman tallied a score of 1.60m (5'3"). Madisyn Hawkins secured another win for Lehigh in the pole vault. The senior's score of 3.35m (10'11.75") got the job done.
In the long jump, Maddy Harding finished second with a mark of 5.33m, while Rachel Sequeira finished third at 5.20m. Sequeira then tallied a second-place finish in the triple jump at 11.67m, while freshman Nina Cialone finished third at 11.13m.
Jade Sessions, Lauren Powell and Carly Friend each picked up wins in their respective track events. Sessions took first in the 1500m with a time of 4:46.88, while Powell's time of 1:07.53 in the 400mH gave her the nod. In the 800m, Friend's time of 2:18.95 was good enough for the win. In the same event, Elyse Barkstrom finished second at 2:20.09. Hetty McMillan finished second behind Sessions in the 1500m at 4:48.81.
In the 100mH, Brett DeWeese notched another win under her belt. The senior won with a time of 15.42, while Ashley Griesmeyer took second at 15.75. In the 3000m steeplechase, sophomore Andrea Miller finished second at 11:34.54. Miller was winning up until the last lap of the race. Alexis Smith took second in the 200m at 26.11.
Lehigh won six total events on the men's side throughout the day-long event. One of the stars on Sunday was Ian Scott, as the sophomore picked up two individual wins and finished tied for first in the high jump. Scott's long jump score of 6.62m gave him the win in that event, while he then won the triple jump by notching a tally of 14.28m (46'10.25"). In the high jump, Scott and Brittann Pierce finished tied for first with marks at 1.95m. Both men attempted the mark of 2.00m but couldn't pass.
In the 5000m run, Jeffrey Kirshenbaum won with a time of 15:07.50. Nick Wilson finished right behind Kirshenbaum for second at 15:13.62. Michael Nardelli secured another win for the Mountain Hawks in the 110mH. The junior's time of 15.53 bested the field, while freshman Daniel Stipanov finished right behind Nardelli for second at 15.95. In the steeplechase, Nick Norton and Avery Lederer dominated the race. Both men went back-and-forth but a late stumble from Lederer gave Norton the win. Norton's time was 9:34.99, while Lederer finished second at 9:37.98.
Riley Lariviere had an impressive outing on Sunday by taking second in the discus throw at 45.29m (148'7") and third in the hammer throw (52.48m). In the javelin, Anastasios Mouzakis finished fourth at 40.10m, while Quinn Conlan took fifth at 37.59m. Sophomore Connor Melko also registered a solid outing throughout the day. The distance runner took second in the 1500m at 3:52.88 and third in the 800m at 1:56.48. Jacob Martinez finished ahead of Melko in the 800m at 1:56.14.
Rounding out the afternoon for the Brown and White, Samuel Tapera took third In the 100m with a time of 11.31, while Amondo Lemmon concluded the day with a third-place finish in the 400m at 50.98.
Up next, Lehigh will travel to Easton next Saturday for the Lafayette Invitational.
