BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball program earned a pair of Patriot League weekly awards, as the league office announced its slate Tuesday afternoon. Senior outfielder Eric Cichocki was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time and junior right-hander Mason Black was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career as well.
Cichocki was the offensive star of the Mountain Hawks' season-opening victory at Coppin State Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the series, he went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four stolen bases. The hits and stolen bases were a career-high for Cichocki.
In Game 2, he went 1-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and three runs scored as the leadoff man. In total, Cichocki hit .556 (5-for-9) with a double, two walks and five stolen bases.
Situationally, he hit .714 (5-for-7) against righties, .714 (5-for-7) batting leadoff and .625 (5-for-8) with the bases empty.
Playing and starting in the outfield for the first time in his career, Cichocki exited the weekend with a perfect fielding percentage.
This is the second major weekly award Black earned already this week after his career performance on the mound in the season opener at CSU. The junior was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week on Monday.
Black threw a no-hitter through five innings and was perfect through four, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out 11 of the 16 batters he faced on 73 pitches against the Eagles. His 11 strikeouts thrown are a career-high, eclipsing his previous high of nine set three times to conclude the 2020 campaign.
The Third Team Preseason All-American by Baseball America, Patriot League Preseason Pitcher of the Year and a member of the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List earns this particular weekly award for the first time in his career after his first start of the year. Black was named Rookie of the Week once during the 2019 season.
The Mountain Hawks visit our Nation's capital on Saturday, taking on George Washington for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m.
