BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It's now straight weeks of weekly awards for the Lehigh baseball team, as the Mountain Hawks received their third straight Patriot League Player of the Week honor, this time by junior third baseman Gerard Sweeney. Junior left-hander Matt Stamford was named Pitcher of the Week by the league, announced Tuesday afternoon.
Sweeney and Stamford are the Mountain Hawks' fourth and fifth weekly award winners since the beginning of the season two weeks ago. This is the first honors for both of the student-athletes in their careers so far.
This is the first time in program history that the Mountain Hawks captured Player of the Week honors in three consecutive weeks.
Sweeney hit .400 (4-for-10) with four runs scored and two RBI's while slugging .700 and reaching base at a .647 clip to help Lehigh take two of three games from Bucknell. He walked five times and was hit by two pitches during the series. He drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle in the seventh inning of the Mountain Hawks' 4-3 victory in game one of Saturday's double-header. His 12th inning leadoff triple started the rally and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on the road in a 17-10 victory.
Stamford earned his first victory of the season after tossing 5.2 perfect innings of relief in the Mountain Hawks' 12-inning, 17-10 win over Bucknell on Sunday. He struck out seven batters on 62 pitches to help his team capture its fourth win of the season so far and second Patriot League win. Both his innings pitched and strikeouts were career-highs.
In general, pitching was a strength for the Mountain Hawks over the weekend, punching out 41 batters through the three contests, while walking just eight.
Lehigh continues Patriot League play over the weekend with a home doubleheader against Navy set for Saturday at noon and a single game in Annapolis on Sunday with first pitch at 2 p.m.
