BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of Lehigh men's lacrosse standouts have been named to the initial Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced on Thursday. The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Junior Tommy Schelling was named to the list for a second straight season – just the fourth player in program history to be named to the Watch List multiple times – while classmate Mike Sisselberger earned the honor for the first time. This marks just the sixth time in program history the Mountain Hawks have featured multiple student-athletes named to the Watch List in a given season.
Â
The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award.Â
Â
Last year, Schelling joined teammates Conor Gaffney and Andrew Pettit on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The Mountain Hawks now feature a pair of faceoff specialists, who have received the honor in their careers – Gaffney and now Sisselberger.
Â
One of just two faceoff specialists named to the initial watch list, Sisselberger stands second in the nation in faceoff percentage, winning 78.0 percent (32-of-41). He has taken the most faceoffs of anyone currently in the top five nationally, while his 10.0 groundballs per game are good for fourth in the country. Most recently, Sisselberger won 16-of-19 faceoffs in Saturday's big 10-6 win over Loyola, most of his faceoffs coming against 2020 third team All-American Baily Savio (Savio was just 1-of-12 against Sisselberger on the afternoon). In the opener, Sisselberger won 16-of-22 faceoffs vs. NJIT. He has also scored a goal in both games so far, while collecting 10 groundballs in each contest.
Â
Meanwhile, Schelling picked up right where he left off last season, currently leading the Mountain Hawks in points (12) and assists (8). His 6.0 points per game are tied for 11th nationally. In the opener vs. NJIT, Schelling posted seven points (two goals, five assists), despite only playing the first half. He went on to record a game-high five points in last Saturday's big win against the Greyhounds. Going back to last season, Schelling has posted five or more points in five of the last 10 games, tallying at least three points in all 10 contests.
Â
On Monday, the Mountain Hawks jumped to No. 11 in all major national polls. Standing 2-0 on the season, Lehigh will return to action when it travels to Bucknell on Sunday to face the Bison. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
