BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball junior right-handed pitcher Mason Black got the 2021 season off exactly the way he wanted, as his tremendous performance earned him National Player of the Week honors by Collegiate Baseball announced Monday morning.

Black is the second Lehigh player named National Player of the Week in the last three seasons after Tony Gallo won the award in 2019.

Saturday's outing at Coppin State was a statement one for Black, as he went five strong innings without allowing a hit or a run and struck out 11 of the 16 batters he faced, earning the victory in a 9-0, one-hit shutout victory over the Eagles.

Black's 11 strikeouts are a career-high, smashing his previous total of nine, which he set on three separate occasions during the 2020 campaign.

In addition to Collegiate Baseball's award for the junior, Black also earned a nod as one of four D1Baseball Golden Spikes Award Performance of the Week nominees, with fan voting commencing on Twitter today to decide the award-winner for the week.
