
Track and Field thrives at Patriot League Indoor Challenge

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field team concluded the Patriot League Indoor Challenge with nine first-time winners. The Mountain Hawks competed against the Raiders and the Leopards of Lafayette on Saturday.
As a team, the Brown and White would've swept the podium, as both teams finished first. The men's team had score of 109 points, while Colgate finished second at 44. Then on the women's side, Lehigh won with a tally of 101 points, while Colgate again finished second with a score of 88.
Starting with the women, Chae Kim, Ashley Struck, Kerry Perna and Natalie Condon all won their respective events. In the finals of the 60mH, Kim edged teammate Ashley Griesmeyer with a time of 9.43. Griesmeyer's time of 9.70 was good enough for second. In the 200m, the freshman Struck won with a time of 27.36. Perna, another freshman, won the high jump at 1.60m. Calista Marzolino took second at 1.55m. Then in the mile run, the junior Condon edged freshman Christina Yakaboski for first with a time of 5:13.75. Yakaboski's 5:16.83 was awarded second.
Keeping it on the women's side, the 4x400m relay team of Struck, Simone Davey, Aisha Kumar and Madison Harding took first with a time of 4:15.18. Meanwhile, Teasha McKoy picked up two wins in the shot put and the weight throw. In the shot put, McKoy notched a score of 12.56m, while recording a 17.76m mark in the weight throw.
The men had five first-time winners on Saturday to help propel Lehigh past the other two teams. Douglas Cooke, Amondo Lemmon, Jacob Martinez, Michael Nardelli and Conor Reilly all picked up their first collegiate wins.
In the 200m dash, Lemmon blew by his opponents with a time of 24.09, while Cooke's time of 53.51 in the 200m gave the sophomore his first win. In the 60mH, Nardelli bested his prelim time of 8.75 in the finals, as he won with a time of 8.73. Freshman Dan Stipanov's time of 8.83 was inches behind Nardelli. Martinez's 4:23.29 in the mile run was good enough for first, while Kyle Burke was right behind him at second with a time of 4:24.52.
In the pole vault, the freshman Reilly secured his first of many future wins with a mark of 4.25m. Lehigh also picked up three wins from sophomore Ian Scott in the high jump (1.90m), long jump (6.34m) and the triple jump (13.44m.). The Mountain Hawks' last win on the day came from the 4x400m relay group consisting of Lemmon, Burke, Martinez and Evan El-Halawani at 3:34.33.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks are scheduled to be off until Sunday, March 21. Lehigh is scheduled to start the outdoor season with a home meet.
