Mountain Hawks face quality challenge from Villanova in road action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped on Sunday by Mizzou in the championship of the Christmas City Classic and look to get back on track Wednesday at Villanova in a matchup renewed for the first time since 2018, tipping off at 7 p.m. from Finneran Pavilion.
The Mountain Hawks looked strong in the first quarter against the Tigers, out-scoring Mizzou 19-14 in the frame. However, Lehigh fell victim to a 36-15 second quarter from Mizzou, falling by 19 by the end of the contest.
Lehigh had four players score in double-figures led by Mackenzie Kramer with 16 points. Frannie Hottinger finished with 13, Megan Walker had 12 and Emma Grothaus added 11 points. Clair Steele tallied four assists along with Kramer to lead the team, as Steele failed to register at least five helpers for the first time this season. Kramer and Walker were named to the Christmas City Classic All-Tournament team for their performances against Rider and Mizzou. Kramer was also named an honorable mention by the Patriot League this week.
Notably, the Mountain Hawks converted on 15 3-pointers against the Tigers on Sunday, coming just one short of tying the Patriot League and Lehigh record for made 3-pointers in a game, when Lehigh had 16 vs. American in 2021.
Four Mountain Hawks are averaging double figures in scoring this season led by Hottinger (17.4 ppg) and Kramer (16.1) as well as Grothaus (12.9) and Walker (10.1). Hottinger and Kramer's marks are good for fourth and fifth in the Patriot League in scoring so far this season. Speaking of Patriot League statistical leaders, Hottinger is ranked second in field goal percentage (51.6 percent), Steele is first in assists (6.0) and Kramer and Walker sit first and fourth in 3-pointers made per game with 3.3 and 2.1 respectively.
Villanova looks to rebound on Wednesday against Lehigh after falling to Temple, 68-62 at home. The loss is its third of the season, previously losing to Princeton and Maryland.
Through the first five games of the season, Villanova has gotten victories over Big Five foes Saint Joseph's and Penn on the road.
Versus Temple, Lior Garzon led Nova with 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the field, going just 3-for-13 from beyond-the-arc. Villanova struggled shooting threes as a team, going just 5-for-20 from 3-point land. Brianna Herilhy had 14 points, seven boards and five assists, while Bella Runyan added 13 with seven rebounds and five assists.
Garzon is tops on the team in points per game (18.0), while Maddy Siegrist leads the way with 7.5 rebounds and Runyan is averaging 3.0 assists per contest.
The Wildcats had a strong showing during the 2020-21 campaign in head coach Denise Dillon's first season as head coach. Villanova went 17-7 overall with a 9-5 record in Big East play. It got a 78-72 OT victory over DePaul in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament before being ousted by eventual-champion UConn in the semis, 84-39. Villanova made a solid WNIT run, winning the first two matchups against UMass and Florida before falling to Delaware, 77-70 in the quarterfinals.
Wednesday night marks the 12th matchup all-time between Lehigh and Villanova, continuing the series from 2018. The two teams met in four straight years from 2015-2018.
The Wildcats have a 10-1 edge in the all-time series and have won each of the last eight meetings dating back to Nov. 23, 2010. The Mountain Hawks last topped Villanova at Stabler Arena on Dec. 5, 2009, 80-65.
Among the previous 11 meetings, three have went to overtime, resulting in victory for Villanova. Lehigh is 0-4 all-time against the Wildcats at Finneran Pavilion.
