Mountain Hawks, Bulldogs to Meet Wednesday Night in Connecticut
11/30/2021 10:17:00 AM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa – Lehigh and Yale will renew its Patriot League-Ivy League rivalry on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks and Bulldogs square off in Connecticut. Lehigh will be looking to get on track following a tough 1-6 month of November, while Yale enters Wednesday following an up-and-down season so far, standing 4-4 overall. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Following a win over Ivy League foe Columbia on Tuesday, Lehigh put forth strong first halves at Virginia (trailing 25-21) and vs. Saint Francis (leading 27-26), before tough second halves in both cases. Last time out, the Red Flash exploded for 53 second-half points after Lehigh held them to just 26 in the first. After Saint Francis opened double-figure second-half lead, Lehigh twice pulled within five following 3-pointers - from junior Jakob Alamudun with 11:40 remaining (which pulled the Mountain Hawks within 49-44) and senior Jeameril Wilson with 8:52 on the clock (which pulled Lehigh within 55-50). However, the Red Flash immediately staged a 17-2 run to erase any doubt.
Wilson led the offense with a career-high tying 20 points, his second 20-point game this season (along with at Monmouth). He was extremely efficient, knocking down 7-of-9 field goals and 4-of-5 3-pointers. His four made threes set a new career high while Wilson added two assists to reach exactly 100 in his career. Classmate Nic Lynch scored a season-high 11 points, while junior Evan Taylor scored 11 as well – his fourth game this season in double figures. As a team, the Mountain Hawks had significantly fewer turnovers than their average, but still finished with 13. In the end, the loss snapped Lehigh's six-game winning streak against the Red Flash at home and snapped a seven-game stretch in the series in which the home team won.
Coming in at No. 25 in the Mid-Major Top 25, Yale stands 4-4 on the young season. The team didn't compete last season (due to the Ivy League not playing). Yale was 23-7 the year prior, advancing to the Ivy League Tournament before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yale finished the 2018-19 campaign 22-8, winning the Ivy League and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. So far this season, four Bulldogs are averaging double-figure points, led by Azar Swain (18.4 points per game). Matthue Cotton is next at 11.8, followed by Jalen Gabbidon at 10.4. Yale has featured a veteran starting lineup with three seniors and two juniors. Among the Bulldogs' wins are victories over UMass, Siena and Milwaukee. Most recently, Stony Brook dropped a tight 85-81 final against Stony Brook.
Yale has won five straight over Lehigh, this coming after Lehigh defeated the Bulldogs five in a row. Each of Yale's last five wins have been within 13 points (including one in overtime), and all have come down to the final minutes. The teams last met in 2019, a 78-65 Bulldogs' victory. Lehigh erased a 16-point first-half deficit to get as close as one (62-61), but Yale responded with a late 11-0 run. The last times the teams played at Yale, the Bulldogs won a 97-87 shootout. Yale leads the all-time series, 11-8. The two teams first met in 1903-04, a 20-14 Yale win. Yale won the first five meetings before Lehigh's first win on Jan. 9, 1993, 54-53.
After Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks will return home to host Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Lehigh women (who host Binghamton at 2 p.m.).
