Mountain Hawks Wrap Up Fall Schedule with Two Regattas This Weekend
11/12/2021 5:02:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After an impressive performance at the Head of the Schuylkill two weekends ago, the Lehigh rowing team returns to the water for one last time this fall when the Mountain Hawks compete in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and NYRA Invitational on Sunday. Saturday's racing begins at 11:30 a.m. with straight finals for each event, while Sunday begins at 10 a.m. with women's heats (the men's races are going straight to finals).
Â
Lehigh will look to build off one of the program's strongest-ever performances at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, and quite likely the strongest, as the Mountain Hawks took home two Gold medals and a Bronze. The Women's Championship Fours and Women's Frosh/Novice Eight were both victorious while the Women's Championships Eights finished third, and multiple other boats came in the top 10.
Â
"We took a recovery last week after several really hard weeks of training," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We got back after it this week with testing to see how we have progressed over the course of the fall and have seen the majority of the team hit personal bests in the weight room and on the erg. The energy is great and the progress is what we want to see at this point in the year going into our last two races of the fall."
Â
The primary goal of the fall is to learn and grow, and the success the Mountain Hawks have enjoyed is certainly affirmation that they're doing just that.
Â
"Having such great results this fall has been awesome for this pretty young team to feel, and for the upperclassmen to feel like all the hard work and dealing with COVID last year and even this year is worth the effort," said Conley. "I am very excited for this group to see what they can keep reaching for and attaining as they go into winter."
Â
Before the winter comes two final regattas, both of which will be 2,000-meter races. They will also be head-to-head races, rather than the time trial format the Mountain Hawks have raced all fall.
Â
"This will give us a taste of what the spring racing will be like," said Conley. "We want to learn how to get our bow out in front, but most importantly, learn how to really attack the third 500 meters of a race. If they can do that this early in the year, we will be in a great place as we go into winter training."
Â
Another interesting note for the weekend is that the top finishing boats between Lehigh and Lafayette at Saturday's Frostbite Regatta will determine the winner of the River Cup for the 2021 calendar year, since the River Cup couldn't be raced last spring.
Â
Saturday's Frostbite Regatta will take place in West Windsor, N.J. on Lake Mercer while Sunday's NYRA Invitational will be in Ridgefield, N.J. at Overpeck County Park.
