BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team makes its return to the Patriot League Tournament on Sunday, and it will be in familiar territory (on a number of fronts) as the fifth-seeded Mountain Hawks travel to the fourth-seeded Bucknell Bison for a 1 p.m. opening kickoff on ESPN+. The last time Lehigh was in the tournament, 2018, it was the No. 5 seed and captured a thrilling 2-1 overtime win at No. 4 Bucknell in the quarterfinals, on the way to an appearance in the Patriot League Championship Game.
Â
Lehigh and Bucknell will also be quite familiar with each other, following the Bison taking a 1-0 overtime win at Lehigh in the regular season finale Wednesday. The way out-of-town scores worked out, the winner of that game was going to host the other in the quarterfinals. Despite the Mountain Hawks finishing with a 12-5 edge in shots on goal (and 25-17 edge in total shots), Bucknell put home a second ball off a corner kick in the 92nd minute to secure the victory and the home game.
Â
That Bison win snapped a three-game Lehigh unbeaten streak in the series. Â Sophomore Ava Schaller, who was one of five Mountain Hawks named All-Patriot League on Friday, led Lehigh in shots with five while senior Rebecca Van Siclen and junior Julianna Bonner each had four.
Â
Lehigh owns a 6-9-1 overall record and 4-4-1 Patriot League mark. Bucknell stands 8-7-3 and 5-2-2 in league play. The Bison are 5-1-2 at home, with the only loss coming to No. 12 West Virginia. Rylee Donaldson, who scored the game-winner on Wednesday, leads the Patriot League with 10 goals. Abby Gearhart has 14 points via five goals and four assists, while Teresa Deda leads the league in assists (11). Jenna Hall has started all 18 games, recording a 1.48 GAA and 76.3 save percentage, including stopping all 12 shots sent her way Wednesday.
Â
Bucknell leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 17-13-4, but the Mountain Hawks have seen their fair share of success. Not only did Lehigh win at Bucknell in the 2018 Patriot League Quarterfinals, but it also defeated the undefeated Bison on Oct. 22, 2016 in Lewisburg. Bucknell had been 13-0-1 before that 3-2 Lehigh win. The Mountain Hawks are 2-0-1 all-time vs. the Bison in the Patriot League Tournament, tying in 2005 (before losing in penalty kicks), winning in the 2010 semifinals at Army West Point (on the way to Lehigh's first-ever league title) then winning in dramatic fashion in 2018 (behind Kayla Arestivo's goal with two seconds left in double overtime).
Â
If the Mountain Hawks win on Sunday, they would advance to the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4 at either No. 1 seed Boston University or No. 2 seed Navy. The lowest remaining seed from the quarterfinals will play the Terriers while the highest remaining seed will face the Midshipmen.
