From The Future: Dear First-Year Mary

Dear First-Year Mary,
Â
Welcome to college! The hard work it took to finally get to Lehigh has paid off and the next four years will challenge you beyond what you are used to.
Â
First and foremost, remember what is important to you personally and go with your gut feeling. Anything you want to accomplish by the end of these four years starts before you even step foot on campus. A quote that has always stuck with me as I grew up has been "Remember where you came from." With everything about to change when you get to campus, be ready to keep your work ethic (or develop a better one), meet new friends and mostly, become independent. No one is going to be around to tell you to clean your room or do your homework; it is up to you to set your priorities early on to establish the importance of school, soccer and track, and friends.
Â
Do take advantage of all the opportunities Lehigh has to offer. Establishing connections with teammates, coaches and alumnae will create meaningful relationships that you will need in the future.
Â
Don't set limits or expectations as these will make your mind race ahead to the next moment. One thing for certain is that time goes by fast and no one knows when your time at Lehigh will end (no one predicted a pandemic). Competing at Lehigh is a privilege. EVERY chance you get to enjoy with your teammates, take advantage of it. You will miss the late nights at Hawks, the Rathbone dates, the Lindy study sessions, preseason, Patriot League competitions and team bonding activities.
Â
The next four years, you will experience some of your highest highs and your lowest lows on and off the field/track. Being a student-athlete will teach you tough lessons about failure, but in the end, you will persevere to become your best self. Have self-confidence to be yourself and share your personality with the Lehigh community.
Â
Practice gratitude and have a positive attitude every day you have the chance to wear Lehigh across your chest. In the end, you won't remember every game or race, but rather the relationships and experiences that stuck out during the journey. Lehigh will become your second family that you will not want to leave.
Â
Work hard, study harder, have so much fun, thank your parents and enjoy the ride!
Â
Your girl,
Senior Year Mary
