Mountain Hawks drop final game of NC State Invitational to No. 24/25 JMU

3/1/2020 12:16:00 PM | Softball

RALEIGH, N.C. – One day after knocking off No. 24/25 James Madison for its first win over a ranked team in 14 years, Lehigh was unable to replicate the feat Sunday, falling 15-3 in five innings in its final game at the NC State Invitational.

The Dukes scored in each of their first four at-bats and hit four home runs to build a 15-0 lead before home runs by sophomore Jaelynn Chesson and junior Allyson Dibsie put the Mountain Hawks on the board.

The Mountain Hawks went 3-2 at the NC State Invitational and are now 6-4 on the season.

James Madison (8-4) scored a run in the first inning and added two more in the second on a Michelle Sullivan home run to take a 3-0 lead, then broke the game open with nine runs in the third inning.

Kate Gordon, Hannah File and Madison Naujokas all homered for the Dukes as part of the nine-run third. James Madison added three more runs in the fourth inning. Sullivan finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Sara Jubas was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Lehigh got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when senior Mary-Hannah Smith reached on an error and then scored on Chesson's second home run in as many days. The Mountain Hawks added a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Dibsie. Lehigh finished with four hits, with Chesson adding a second inning double and junior Payton Alsobrooks recording a single.

Junior Lainey Stephenson took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs in 2.1 innings. Sophomore Addie Kittel and freshman Emily Cimino also saw time in the circle.

The Mountain Hawks will head to Arizona for 11 games over spring break, beginning with six at the ASU Invitational, March 7-9 in Tempe. Lehigh will open the tournament with games against Nebraska (4 p.m. ET) and Arizona State (9 p.m. ET) on Saturday, March 7.
