BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team gets back to work on Saturday evening at Stabler Arena, getting ready to host Lafayette on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Young girls will have the opportunity to test their skills in a variety of sports with Lehigh women's student athletes in the lobby of Stabler prior to tip-off at 6 p.m.
Last Saturday's convincing victory over Army West Point was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Lehigh women's basketball team, with the offense going to work and tallying a season-high 94 points in a 94-65 win over the Black Knights on the road.
The win snapped a season-long four game losing streak for the Mountain Hawks after last getting a win over Navy on Jan. 15.
Mary Clougherty was the hero for Lehigh on Saturday, scoring a career-high mark of 24 points on 6-of-7 shooting from beyond-the-arc. Clougherty scored 16 of her 24 points in the first half and scored her final points of the afternoon on a 3-pointer. Her 24 points is a season-high mark for all Lehigh players after Camryn Buhr and Cameryn Benz each had a few 20-point outings earlier this season.
Back in the starting lineup for the first time since December, Emma Grothaus also had a great day on the offensive side of the ball with 14 points and eight rebounds, but her defense was on a whole other level, registering a career-high six blocks, the most by a Lehigh player since the 2013-14 season.
The Mountain Hawks shot 54.1 percent (40-for-74) from the field and 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from distance, the best offensive performance of the season between both non-league and Patriot League play.
The defense forced 14 Army West Point turnovers and held the Black Knights to 32.2 percent (19-for-59) shooting on the afternoon.
Buhr continues to pace the way for the Lehigh offense with her team-high 12.1 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. Benz is averaging 9.7 ppg this year with 6.4 boards, while Hannah Hedstrom is averaging three rebounds and three assists this season.
There may not be a hotter team in the Patriot League at this moment than Lafayette, winners of five straight games. The Leopards are rolling after back-to-back convincing victories over American and Colgate.
The Leopards last took down the Eagles on Saturday, 67-52 at Bender Arena, after four players scored in double-figures.
Natalie Kucowski led the way once again with her 18 points, seven rebounds and six blocks, adding five assists with three 3-pointers. Alexis Santarelli added 14 points with nine boards, while Drew Freeland finished with 13 points, going 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Nicole Johnson poured in 11 points with three assists, going 3-for-4 from beyond-the-arc.
Lafayette shot a cool 48 percent (24-for-50) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the 3-point line. The defense did it job as well, holding AU to just 52 points on its home court, shooting 33.3 percent (18-for-54) from the field and 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from the 3-point arc.
Kucowski has been the key to the Leopards' success this season and is on her way to being named an All-Patriot League selection for the second straight season. She has dazzled offensively and defensively this year averaging 13.3 points per game and 13.3 rebounds per game, including 59 blocks. The double-double has been the name of her game this season with 13 to her credit so far.
A win for the Leopards against Lehigh would put them in a good position to challenge for the top seed in the league depending on what Bucknell does Saturday against Loyola.
Saturday will mark the 97th meeting all-time of the The Rivalry between the Lehigh and Lafayette women's basketball teams. The matchup dates all the way back to Feb. 4, 1975.
The Mountain Hawks hold a 51-45 advantage in the all-time series including 37-19 in Patriot League play.
Before Lehigh's 61-53 loss to Lafayette last January in Easton, the Mountain Hawks had won eight straight games against the Leopards going back to Jan. 27, 2016. Last month's loss was the first in the careers of the current Lehigh seniors.
Saturday's matchup will be televised by Service Electric 2 Sports, streamed live on the Patriot League Network and broadcast live on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM, 94.7 FM in Allentown with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call.
