Lehigh welcomes Boston University Wednesday night for final regular season home game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off an impressive Senior Day victory over Bucknell, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains home on Wednesday for its final regular season home game, hosting Boston University at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks look to continue the momentum from a wire-to-wire 69-60 win over the Bison, Lehigh's third win its last five games overall.
Sunday marked the Mountain Hawks' second wire-to-wire win of the Patriot League season (also home vs. American). Lehigh jumped out to a 14-2 lead and wouldn't look back. Bucknell made some runs to pull within striking distance, but the Mountain Hawks had an answer every time. The Bison had one last push to within 66-60 with 1:26 remaining, but Lehigh wouldn't allow a single point the rest of the way.
A big story of Sunday's game - and the last two games - has been the play of big men James Karnik and Nic Lynch. On Sunday, both started for the first time and they combined for 34 points (team-high 17 apiece). The duo took over for long stretches, including scoring Lehigh's first 11 points of the second half. Lynch shot 6-of-8 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds while Karnik was 8-of-13 and collected six boards. As a team, the Mountain Hawks held a dominant 42-29 edge on the glass, including 11 offensive rebounds. Junior Marques Wilson led the way with a career-high 10 rebounds. All 42 rebounds came from six players (the five starters and freshman Reed Fenton off the bench, who grabbed four).
Wilson dished five assists for a second straight game and also scored nine points. Sophomore Jeameril Wilson contributed with six points and seven boards as well.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak against Bucknell, giving the Mountain Hawks their first win over the Bison since Feb. 5, 2018 at home (a 92-89 overtime win). Lehigh moved to 5-11 in Patriot League play, two games behind Navy, Loyola and Bucknell, who are tied for sixth place. The Mountain Hawks can't move to the No. 6 seed, but could still move as high as seventh. If Lehigh wins both of its last two games (vs. Boston U. and at Loyola), the Mountain Hawks would earn the No. 7 seed if both Bucknell and Loyola each lose their last two. They would earn the No. 8 seed if one of those two teams lose their last two. If Lehigh earns the No. 7 or 8 seed, it would be home for a Patriot League opening round game next Tuesday night (Mar. 3) at 7 p.m.
Lehigh has been playing strong basketball over the last five games. Three are victories with the losses coming at Army West Point (which was a three-point game with less than three minutes remaining) and at Colgate (a three-point defeat). Those teams are currently in fourth and first in the Patriot League, respectively.
Boston University stands in second place in the Patriot League standings, owning a 17-12 record (11-5 in league play). The Terriers are 9-3 at home, 8-7 on the road and 0-2 in neutral site games. Max Mahoney leads the offense in scoring (15.4 per game) and rebounds (7.9). Walter Whyte (12.6) and Javante McCoy (12.0) are also averaging double figures. BU features two of the top five rebounders in the league in Mahoney and Whyte (7.2). As a team, the Terriers are third in the Patriot League in scoring offense (71.9) and second in scoring defense (67.4). BU has won seven of its last nine games overall. Last time out, the Terriers came back from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat American at home.
The Terriers won the first meeting of 2020, 84-67, to take a 9-7 lead in the all-time series. The Mountain Hawks used a 10-0 second-half run to pull within four with 12:06 remaining, but Boston University pulled away late. Last season, Lehigh swept the season series for the first time since the Terriers joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 campaign. The Mountain Hawks won at home by a 94-78 final before holding on to a big win in Boston, 84-79 for their first-ever regular-season victory at Case Gymnasium. Lehigh has beaten the Terriers in two of the last three meetings in Stabler Arena and three of the last five. Boston U. won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1968-69 by an 81-56 final. It marked the only meeting between the two schools before the Patriot League era.
The Mountain Hawks hit the road for their regular season finale on Saturday at Loyola. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
