BETHLEHEM, Pa. — A catcher who is already expected to do big things for the Lehigh baseball team in 2020, Adam Retzbach was named Preseason Patriot League Rookie of the Year by Perfect Game USA, announced by the national baseball publication Tuesday morning.
Retzbach is an All-League and All-Region selection in both 2018 and 2019 and was named his league's Player of the Year in 2019. He helped lead Lakeland High School to back-to-back-to-back league titles in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and won a district title during the 2018 season.
His senior year, Retzbach batted .471 (24-for-51) with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. He walked 21 times and struck out just four times with an OBP of .645, a slugging percentage of .921 and an OPS of 1.567.
A four-year varsity starter, Retzbach finished his career with a .396 average, 90 hits, 92 RBIs, 16 doubles, 11 homers and a career OBP of .516.
"Adam is a strong armed catcher and physical kid with some huge offensive upside," said head coach Sean Leary. "We're really excited about the potential Adam has on this team. He has all the tools to be a major contributor early in his career."
Retzbach will begin his rookie campaign as the Mountain Hawks' starting catcher this weekend at Davidson, filling the shoes of Jeff Shanfeldt right away, the program's leader in career games caught.
