Mountain Hawks and Black Knights clash Saturday night in Stabler

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team will look to regroup from a tough end of January when it returns home on Saturday night to host Army West Point. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Following their third game in six days on Monday at American, the Mountain Hawks had their most extended layoff between games in Patriot League play. With another long trip in the books, five of Lehigh's final nine regular season games will be at home.
Â
Even Lehigh's remaining four road games will include a number of short trips. The team's longest remaining trip is at Colgate, with trips to Lafayette, Army West Point and Loyola - all less than a three-hour drive. The Mountain Hawks also hope February will bring better luck, much like it has done since February of 2016. Over the last four seasons, Lehigh is 27-5 in February, which is a top five winning percentage in the nation over that span.
Â
The Mountain Hawks have struggled to put everything together so far in Patriot League play. In a pair of the losses (home Navy and at Holy Cross), Lehigh scored 83 and 95 points, but gave up 88 and 96. However, in the Mountain Hawks' other three losses in their five-game losing streak, they only scored 56 points, including last time out at American.
Â
In Monday's contest, Lehigh jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but American used a 14-4 run to take a lead. The Mountain Hawks struggled offensively, even going 7:06 without a field goal, but hit seven free throws and played strong defense to hang within striking distance. Lehigh surged to within four early in the second half, but a 7-0 Eagles' run gave them an 11-point lead, and they wouldn't trail the rest of the way. Monday snapped Lehigh's 10-game winning streak against American. Senior Jordan Cohen led the Mountain Hawks offensively, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Jeameril Wilson scored 11 points for a second straight game, while adding three blocks.
Â
A big story Monday was Lehigh's shooting. The Mountain Hawks were just 13-of-28 from the free throw line (46.4 percent) and 15.8 percent from 3-point range (3-of-19). Lehigh was within 12 with just over three minutes remaining, but the Mountain Hawks fouled early in hopes of getting back into the game. American took advantage and scored 13 of its final 16 points from the free throw line, finishing with 77 points.
Â
A bright spot for Lehigh was the turnover margin (turning the ball over just eight times, while helping force 13 American turnovers). The Mountain Hawks also had 11 offensive rebounds compared to eight for the Eagles. Lehigh was missing a pair of starters once again due to injury as junior James Karnik was missing his seventh straight game while freshman Evan Taylor was missing his second consecutive contest.
Â
Army West Point dropped its first four Patriot League games, but has responded with five straight victories. Most recently, the Black Knights beat Bucknell at home on Wednesday by 68-59 final. Army also beat Holy Cross, Loyola, Lafayette and Navy. Tommy Funk leads the offense, averaging 15.7 points and a league-leading 6.1 assists. With 133 helpers on the year, Funk has 37 more than anyone else in the Patriot League. Matt Wilson is second in scoring (15.3), while his 7.3 boards per contest are fourth in the league and 67.7 field goal percentage is first. Lonnie Grayson is also averaging double-figure points, coming in at 11.1. As a team, the Black Knights are sixth in the Patriot League in scoring offense (70.7) and fifth in scoring defense (71.8).
Â
Lehigh has won four straight over Army West Point, and seven of the last eight meetings, to pull within 64-46 in the all-time series. Last season, the Mountain Hawks erased three double-figure second-half deficits (18, 11 and 15) to win them all, with the final victory sending Lehigh to the Patriot League Semifinals. Army's last win at Lehigh came on Dec. 30, 2015 via an 88-82 final. Since, the Mountain Hawks have won 83-69, 84-53 (Lehigh's largest-ever margin of victory vs. Army), 91-81 and 75-70. The first-ever meeting between the two sides came in 1906-07, a 26-24 Lehigh victory. Army won the next matchup in 1914-15 by a 19-6 final.
Â
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh remains home on Wednesday to host defending Patriot League Champion Colgate at 7 p.m.
