BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a tough week of games, the Lehigh men's basketball team will look to regroup when it travels to our nation's capital to face American on Monday night. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen nation-wide on CBS Sports Network. The Mountain Hawks will look to get back into the win column for the first time since beating American at home on Saturday, Jan. 11, in one of Lehigh's top efforts of the season.
Since the win over the Eagles, Lehigh has dropped home games vs. Navy and Lafayette with two road defeats at Bucknell and Holy Cross sandwiched in between. The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed impressive success against American as of late, having won 10 straight games (beginning in January of 2016). In seven of them, they never trailed while overall, they have only trailed for 19:38 of game action over those 10 contests (405 minutes), which is only 4.8 percent of the time.
The Mountain Hawks enter Monday's contest reeling a bit, having lost four in a row, with the last two being especially tough (in different ways). Lehigh fell at Holy Cross on Wednesday despite leading by 17 in the second half. Then vs. Lafayette Saturday, the Leopards broke open a close game by using a 16-2 run to turn a two-point advantage into a 16-point lead. Lehigh was within two late in the first half, but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
A pair of sophomores led the Mountain Hawks in scoring, with Nic Lynch and Jeameril Wilson scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Both shot 5-of-8 from the field. One game after scoring 95 points, Lehigh struggled in scoring just 56 - its second straight Saturday scoring 56. Leading scorer Jordan Cohen had just two points, but did dish a game-high six assists. A big bright spot was three Mountain Hawk freshmen who each scored eight points - Reed Fenton, Jakob Alamudun and Jake Betlow. Alamudun added six rebounds while Betlow also had two assists and two steals.
The loss snapped Lehigh's eight-game winning streak against Lafayette (spanning four full seasons). The Mountain Hawks hope they can continue another long winning streak on Monday vs. the Eagles. To do so, Lehigh would need to snap an 11-game road losing streak; after picking up an impressive win at Albany in its first road game of the season, the Mountain Hawks have struggled to get over the hump away from home. Monday's contest ends a busy month of travel, which included trips to Navy, Boston University, Bucknell, Holy Cross and American. February sees five of Lehigh's nine games coming at home, with a short road trip to Lafayette and trips to Army West Point, Colgate and Loyola. The Mountain Hawks are currently 2-6 in league play, but two games out of fifth and three out of second, with 10 league contests still remaining.
After American's loss at Lehigh earlier this month, the Eagles went on to win three straight games - beating Bucknell, Holy Cross and Loyola in overtime. Last time out, American fell at home vs. Colgate on Saturday to fall to 5-3 in the league (9-10 overall). That record is good for a three-way tie for second place. The Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Sa'eed Nelson leads the team, and is tied for fourth in the league, in scoring (16.6 points per game). Jamir Harris is also averaging double figures (11.6) while three others are averaging between eight and 10 points. Mark Gasperini leads the way in rebounding (5.7). American is fourth in the league in scoring offense (71.6) and sixth in scoring defense (73.0).
Lehigh has won a program-record 10 straight games against American to take a 29-26 lead in the all-time series. Six of them have come at Lehigh, due to a Patriot League Semifinal contest on Mar. 6, 2016. The Mountain Hawks have won four straight at American, last losing on Jan. 14, 2015 by a 62-59 final. Lehigh and American first played in 1960-61, a 71-61 American victory.
Following Monday's game, Lehigh returns home for two straight, beginning on Saturday night vs. Army West Point. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. To purchase tickets, please click here.
