BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After an outstanding first collegiate season, Lehigh field hockey goalkeeper Maddie Kahn has been named to the 2020 United States Under-21 Women's National Team, as announced by USA Field Hockey on Tuesday. The announcement came after three days of intense training at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. The only Patriot League student-athlete named to the team, Kahn has been involved with USA Field Hockey in the past, including being named to the U.S. Under-19 team in January of 2019.
Â
The Under-21 team will begin training in Chula Vista, Calif. from February 20 to 24. Their second training camp will take place alongside the other women's Junior National teams from March 27 to 29 in Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C. These training camps will be part of the team's year-long preparations for the Junior Pan American Championship that will take place from November 30 to December 13 in Santiago, Chile.
Â
Kahn finished her freshman campaign with a 75.1 save percentage and 2.34 goals against average. Kahn reached double-figure saves on three occasions, including a career-high 12 stops against American and Lafayette. She stopped 10-of-11 shots sent her way in the season finale vs. Boston University. Kahn was integral in the Mountain Hawks' first-ever win over the Terriers, who were the defending Patriot League champions. Kahn won three Patriot League weekly awards in 2019, which includes winning both Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week following the Boston University win. Kahn finished second in the Patriot League in saves (127) and shutouts (3), and was third in save percentage.
Â
Highlights were aplenty for the Mountain Hawks in 2019. Lehigh improved its final record to 7-11, including 2-4 in league play. The Mountain Hawks finished in a three-way tie for fourth place (with Holy Cross and Boston University), but the Crusaders won the tiebreaker. Fourth was Lehigh's best finish since the expansion of the Patriot League to seven teams (with the addition of Boston University). Along with their best start since 1983 and best overall record since 2007, the Mountain Hawks' 35 goals were also their most since 2007 while their 43 goals allowed were fewest since 2003. Lehigh's goal differential (-8) was also its best since 2004.
