BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following an exciting 1-0 season-opening win at Rider, the Lehigh field hockey team heads home to host Towson this Friday at 5 p.m. With a win, the Mountain Hawks would begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2002. That was also the last time, prior to last Friday, that Lehigh won its season opener on the road.
There will not be a live stream for Friday's contest, but fans can follow updates through Live Stats and the Lehigh field hockey Twitter page.
In their opener, the Mountain Hawks scored the game's only goal midway through the second quarter, scored by junior Anna Lehman off a nifty play from classmate Lenke Havas on a penalty corner. That stood to be the difference, as Lehigh's defense successfully defended 11 Rider penalty corners for the Mountain Hawks' first shutout since 2017. It was also the first time Rider was shut-out at home since the 2017 campaign. Prior to last Friday, the last time Lehigh had won at Rider was 2000, also a 1-0 season-opening win. Since that point, the Mountain Hawks had allowed five or more goals in three of the next five games at Rider.
The win came against a competitive Broncs' program that is consistently in the mix for its conference crown and this year, was predicted second in the NEC preseason poll. Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer is now 2-1 against Rider in her Lehigh career, also winning her first-career game as Mountain Hawks' head coach in 2016, and dropping a tight 4-2 final to Rider last season.
Lehigh will face a rebuilding Towson team on Friday that stands 0-1 following a 3-0 loss against Appalachian Towson lost its leading scorer from a season ago in Katie McNeel (17 points: seven goals, three assists), but returns its next two scorers in Abby Webster (three goals, one assist) and Beira Ho (two goals, three assists), who each had seven points apiece. Both of the Tigers' goaltenders who saw time last season graduated.
The Mountain Hawks are 15-1 all-time vs. Towson, winning at Towson 3-2 to end last season. The last time the sides played in Bethlehem, Lehigh picked up an impressive 5-0 victory.
Following Friday's game, Lehigh returns to action next weekend when it hosts Richmond next Friday (4 p.m.) and Georgetown on Sunday (12 p.m.).
