HAMILTON, N.Y. – Trailing 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining, the Lehigh field hockey team scored twice in the game's final 4:10 to pick up a thrilling 2-1 victory at Colgate in the Patriot League opener for both sides on Saturday. Junior Anna Lehman evened the score at the 55:50 mark before classmate Drew Pecora scored the game-winner with just 1:39 remaining in regulation. The Mountain Hawks now improve to 4-1 on the season, marking their best record after five games in 21 years (1998), also winning their Patriot League opener for the first time since 2009.
"Today was not our best performance but it did reveal our ability to stay composed and confident when the game was on the line," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We proved to ourselves that we can come from behind and trust our ability to execute in big moments, and that is a great lesson to learn early in the season."
Along with their 4-1 record after five games and capturing the league opener, the Mountain Hawks have now won their first two road games of the season for the first time since 2000. Lehigh has also scored multiple goals in a fourth straight game for the first time since 2012 and won four times in any five game stretch for the first time since 2012 as well.
A scoreless first half saw Lehigh hold a slim 4-3 edge in shots, but the Raiders posted a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Colgate broke through late in the third quarter. With 5:26 remaining, Taylor Casamassa beat freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn with a shot from the top of the circle. Having one shot on goal to that point, the Mountain Hawks turned up the heat late in the third quarter and fourth. Lehigh fired three shots on target in the final 39 seconds of the stanza, two coming from sophomore Olivia Perrone, but Colgate goalkeeper Anna Unger made the saves.
Unger went on to make two more stops early in the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Hawks broke through late. With just 4:10 remaining, Lehman made a deflection in front of the cage, beating Unger and pulling the Mountain Hawks even. Perrone recorded an assist on the play.
Then, less than three minutes later, it was Lehman who assisted on Pecora's fifth goal of the season (in just five games) to put Lehigh ahead, 2-1. Neither side fired a shot the rest of the way as the Mountain Hawks walked away with the victory.
Lehigh outshot Colgate 5-1 in the fourth quarter to finish with a 14-8 edge for the game. The Mountain Hawks also had nine penalty corners to Colgate's four. Kahn stood tall with four saves across Unger, who made six.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to Wagner to face the Seahawks. Gametime is 1:30 p.m. and can be seen live on NEC Front Row.
"We have a quick turnaround before going into Wagner tomorrow and I know we will be eager to make adjustments that will have us ready for our next Patriot League game next week," said Dallmeyer.
