BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh men's soccer is back in action this weekend, this time for the Patriot League opener at American on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a heartbreaking defeat at Binghamton on Tuesday night after giving up two goals in the 89th and 91st minutes in the team's first overtime game of the 2019 season.
Despite the loss on Tuesday, Lehigh once again had superb offensive success from sophomore forward Josh Luchini, who scored his fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute against the Bearcats. Luchini has scored a goal in each of his last four contests dating back to Sept. 6 at Northwestern. Through five games this season and all his appearances last season during his freshman campaign, Luchini has tallied 10 goals in his career so far.
Junior midfielder Stevo Bednarsky tallied the assist on the Luchini goal on Tuesday night, his first of the year.
Including Luchini, 10 Mountain Hawks have registered a shot on goal this season. Leading the way is Luchini (9), followed by Trevor Koski (7), Natan Rosen (5) and Bednarsky (2).
Aside from the 2-1 loss on Tuesday, Lehigh's defense has been the team's brightest spot for most of the year so far. All three of the team's shutouts this season have been shutouts, as the defense, led by senior Zarin Tuten, junior Tyler Dressman and sophomore Nick Jennings among others have been very consistent, being a solid backbone for senior goalkeeper Will Smith. So far, Smith has a goals against average of 0.80 and a save percentage of 0.778 through his first five games this season.
Lehigh's opponent for Saturday is American, who represents the Mountain Hawks' first Patriot League opponent of the season. The Eagles have had a rough start to the season, still looking for their first win of 2019. They are coming off a loss to No. 3 Stanford and Cal last weekend on the road. American has dropped four straight contests. The Eagles have scored just one goal this season, off the foot of Malachy McGovern at George Mason during the first game of the year. Both Fabio Massaro and Tim Neumann have registered assists on the one goal. Two goalkeepers have split duties for American through the team's first six games of the season as Jake Agnew has played in four games, while John Mino has played in the other two.
American leads the all-time series against Lehigh, 13-8-5 with the Eagles coming out on top last season, 1-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks had five shots on goal in the final minute, but Mino made all five saves to come away with the victory.
