Mountain Hawks receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its list of All-Academic individual and team award winners from this past season. Both the Lehigh men's and women's programs were honored with team awards, while four members of the men's and women's track and field programs were honored by the USTFCCCA  for their academic success.
 
Lehigh's juniors Joey Kelly, Kyle Sult and Kip Yegon were among a group of 583 men who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
 
On the women's side, recent graduate Clare Severe represented the Mountain Hawks, earning All-Academic Honors. Severe was one of 902 women who were honored.
 
Under head coach Matt Utesch, the men's program carried a team 3.16 cumulative grade-point average while the women's program posted 3.49 for the past academic year. In all, 139 men's programs and 227 women's programs were awarded with team awards.
 
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
 
  • For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
  • For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
 
Kelly, a Bioengineering major who hails from Pittsburgh, is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. In the 2019 indoor Patriot League Championships, Kelly finished third overall in the pole vault, earning a personal record of 5.10m.

Sult finished second in the decathlon at Patriot League Championships in 2019, winning the shot put, high jump, discuss and javelin, and scoring a personal record of 6,813 points. The Cranesville native majoring in Mechanical Engineering is a two-time Academic All-Patriot League selection and is a two-time honoree of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
 
Yegon, the Religion Studies major, is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The veteran runner for the Brown and White was the IC4A Champion in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal record time of 8:53.36. Yegon qualified for NCAA East Preliminaries where he finished 36th. In 2018, the senior from Bomet, Kenya, won the Patriot League Championship in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:06.58.
 
Severe, a two-time Patriot League Champion and two-sport standout, won gold as a mid-distance runner in the 4x800m relay in 2019 (8:48.80) and the Distance Medley Relay in 2018 (11:58.94).Severe qualified for the East Preliminaries in the 1500m and was named Academic All-Patriot League. The Bioengineering major started 64 games for the women's soccer team throughout her four years at Lehigh.
