Junior right-hander becomes 14th player drafted in program history
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — On Day 3 of the 2019 MLB Draft, a Lehigh baseball player was taken for the second day in a row as junior right-hander Jason Reynolds was selected in the 32nd round, pick No. 953 by the San Diego Padres.
With the selection, Reynolds is the 14th Lehigh player all-time drafted by a major league organization. The junior joins fellow Lehigh teammate Levi Stoudt, who was also taken in the draft, in the third round (97th overall) by the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. This is the first time since the 2015 season (Justin Pacchioli & Mike Garzillo) that two Lehigh players were taken in the same draft. He is also the second player, along with Pacchioli, to be taken by the Padres in the draft.
Reynolds wrapped up his 2019 campaign with a 2-6 record, striking out 49 batters and walking 24 in 50 innings of work as the team's No. 2 starter for most of the season. He took more of a bullpen role in the later stages of the season as the Mountain Hawks tried to make a late season push to the Patriot League Tournament.
The righty struck out a season-high nine batters in a victory over Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24 and followed up that performance with four shutout innings of Monmouth on Mar. 8, striking out seven and walking three, allowing just two hits. Reynolds closed out the season with back-to-back strong outings out of the bullpen for the Mountain Hawks, pitching scoreless frames against Patriot League foes Army West Point (5/4) and Holy Cross (5/6) at J. David Walker Field.
"Jason has put his time in and no two kids, including Levi, have worked harder since they've been here," said head coach Sean Leary. "They've both worked on their velocities and Jason has not only done it at a level where he's come from under-the-radar to on everyone's radar.
"Specifically, he's been willing to listen, willing to be coached and he's willing to put all the effort and time into it. So I think the Padres are getting a young man who has tremendous upside and I full confidence he's ready for the next level."
If Reynolds were to sign with the Padres in the coming days, the right-hander will have accumulated a career 9-16 record with a 4.27 ERA in 166.1 innings of work. He had two complete games, earned his first career save in 2019 and struck out 148 batters, joining the 100-strikeout club earlier in the season.
