Junior righty becomes highest drafted pitcher in program history

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For the first time since 2017, the Lehigh baseball program has a draft selection in the MLB Draft, as junior right-hand pitcher Levi Stoudt was selected on Tuesday by the Seattle Mariners in the third round, 97th overall pick.

Stoudt becomes the 13th player in program history to be drafted by a big-league franchise and the highest drafted pitcher since Paul Hartzell (10th round, 1979) and player since Matt McBride (2nd, 2006).

The junior had a stellar season in 2019 as the ace of the starting rotation, finishing the year 3-4 with a 3.53 ERA. He struck out 69 batters and walked just 21 in 63.2 innings of work. His ERA and strikeout totals ranked fourth among all qualified Patriot League pitchers. In addition to those stats, Stoudt also led his Mountain Hawk teammates in complete games (3) and opponent's batting average (.228). To conclude the year, the righty was named Second Team All-Patriot League for the second time in his career.

In terms of dominant outings during the 2019 season, three stand out the most as Stoudt struck out a season-high 10 batters at Maryland Eastern Shore (3/8), while pitching scoreless outings against The Shore, VMI (3/15) and Navy (4/13).

"For Levi, the talent and work ethic is definitely there," said head coach Sean Leary. "But I think his maturity, his poise, his body language on the mound, a lot of the things that are intangibles, he has higher grades on those things for myself and for the scouts that have watched him pitched.

"He seemed to step forward when he faced Graeme Stinson (Duke), he seemed to step forward when he faced Noah Song (Navy). He had some outings in the Cape Cod League where he had his best outings in the moments when he faced pressure the most."

When Stoudt signs with the Mariners in the coming days, he will have concluded a solid three-year career with the Mountain Hawks, finishing with 10 victories, a career 2.97 ERA, with 181 strikeouts and 65 walks in 190.2 innings of work. The right-hander made 34 starts, 10 of which were complete games.
