Malloy, Shanfeldt, Frohman voted to Academic All-Patriot League team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Three members of the Lehigh baseball team were named Academic All-Patriot League selections by the league announced on Thursday afternoon as seniors Ryan Malloy, Jeff Shanfeldt and Ethan Frohman all end their careers with top academic honors.
 
Only 13 players in the Patriot League are voted onto the team, as athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his sport to be eligible.
 
A finance major, Ryan Malloy concludes his four-year career with the Mountain Hawks with his first appearance on the Academic All-Patriot League team with a cumulative 3.90 GPA. The Holland, Pa. native was also selected to be First Team All-Patriot League on Wednesday for his outstanding performance on the diamond in 2019. Malloy improved his game dramatically from 2018 to 2019, lifting his batting average from .227 last season to .309 in 2019. He had career highs in games played (47), at-bats (178), runs (40), hits (55), doubles (15), triples (2), home runs (8), RBIs (41), slugging percentage (.551), walks (16), hit by pitches (13), on-base percentage (.396), sacrifice flies (5) and fielding putouts (71). Malloy was Lehigh's hit king in 2019 and was tied for the team-lead in home runs. He finished third in the league in doubles, tied for second in home runs and was third in slugging percentage. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Malloy was named the John A. Cable Graduating Male Leader award winner by the Lehigh Athletic Department at the annual convocation on Monday. He is a six-time Dean's List recipient and has achieved a 4.0 GPA on four occasions, earning a spot on Patriot League Honor Roll three times so far.
 
Jeff Shanfeldt makes his way on the 13-man academic all-league team for a second consecutive season. The finance and accounting major carries a 3.83 cumulative GPA and had a very successful senior year, being named a Poets and Quants Class of 2019 Best and Brightest award recipient. He's a six-time Dean's List recipient and a three-time member of the Patriot League Honor Roll. In 2019, he was voted Second Team All-Patriot League for the second straight season. The catcher had a much-improved season from the 2018 campaign, hitting .285 (47-for-165) with a team-high 14 doubles, 42 runs and 46 RBIs, along with a share for the team lead in home runs with eight. His 34 walks were second most on the team and he led all Mountain Hawks with a .428 on-base percentage. During the year, he had a team-best 14 multi-hit games including a season-long 20 game on-base streak. Shanfeldt finishes his career as Lehigh all-time leader in games caught with 135.  During Monday's convocation, he received a Distinguished Achievement Award.
 
Ethan Frohman is officially member of the Patriot League Academic All-League team for the second straight year. The Industrial and Systems Engineering major carries a cumulative 3.94 GPA to graduation in May. He is a seven-time Dean's List recipient and has achieved a 4.0 term in five semesters while at Lehigh. The left-hander finishes his career ranked second in all-time saves with 11. In 2019, he established himself a member of the starting rotation, finishing the year as Lehigh's leader in wins with four, earning a 4-2 record with a 4.73 ERA, striking out 44 batters and walking just 15 in 45.2 innings of work. He allowed zero home runs, hit none and had just one wild pitch in 14 appearances this season. The Berkeley Heights, N.J. native received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Lehigh Athletics Department at the annual convocation on Monday and is a three-time letter winner with the Mountain Hawks.
