WORCESTER, Mass. — The Lehigh men's track and field team finished seventh at the 2019 Patriot League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Holy Cross. Sophomore Sean Brown won the Mountain Hawks' lone league title on the second day of competition.
Brown earned his first career Patriot League title for his 3:45.72 performance in the 1500m. Brown's time broke the school record of 3:46.33, set in 2015 by Ryan Mahalsky.
"He was in a battle down the home stretch and his competitor came across the line first but was ultimately disqualified," Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. "So, we didn't know that Sean had won right away but then the officials made the call. Sean was fully deserving of it. That kid, what a hard worker and vicious competitor. It's great to watch him run."
Junior Kyle Sult finished second in the decathlon, earning 6813 points. Sult finished the two-day multi event on Saturday with a first place finish in the discus (37.37m), first place finish in the javelin (55.49m), second place finish in the 110m hurdles (15.32), fourth place finish in the pole vault (4.35m) and a tenth place finish in the 1500m (5:06.37).
Sult had both an overall personal record in the decathlon and personal records in eight of the 10 events.
"He had personal records in eight of the 10 events," Utsech said. "He also had a 853 point personal record overall. It, honestly, is not that surprising that he put up that kind of score, mostly because I've seen it coming in a lot of things, I've seen it in a lot of places. I know he's capable and the really encouraging thing is he's got a lot more in him. That win puts him second on our descending order list in the multi, right behind (seven-time Patriot League Champion) Trevor Knowles."
Junior Victor Yegon finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing with an IC4A-qualifying time of 9:13.12 and earning two team points for the Mountain Hawks.
In the hurdles, sophomore Evan El-Halawani finished ninth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.33.
Junior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum finished 10th overall in the 5000m with a time of 14:45.06.
In the field events, senior Ryan Givens finished in sixth place in the high jump, earning a mark of 1.92m and earning Lehigh three team points.
"Ryan's been a great competitor for us all four years," Utesch said. "He's been on the podium a ton and I'll be sad to see him graduate."
Junior Erik Metz finished eighth in the triple jump, earning a mark of 13.86m.
"Erik had a phenomenal day, with a 30 centemeter PR," Utsech said. "He really came to compete and he did a great job. He's been coming along and really brought it all today."
In throws, senior Alexander Rodgers finished 12th in the shot put with a 13.54m performance. In the discus, sophomore Riley LaRiviere finished 17th, earning a personal record 41.94m mark.
"Those guys have been through a lot this year, and I'm excited for their futures," Utesch said. "We have Alex back next year, he's going to be a volunteer on staff for us, so I'm happy about that because he has a great leadership quality about him and a great work ethic and I know he's going to continue to lead the younger guys. Riley has turned it on here at the end of the year. I'm really pleased he had a personal record in his favorite event and he's going to do some really great work next year."
"I'm not happy with our overall finish, we had some good things and some bad things," Utesch said. "I like our position for the future. We're a young team this year, so I'm really optimistic about where we'll go from here. We had a bunch of people qualify for ECACs/IC4As and we start tomorrow with some new hope for those competitions."
The action continues next weekend for Lehigh as it travels to West Point, N.Y., for the West Point Twilight on Thursday. Qualifying athletes will also compete at the ECAC/IC4A Championship on Saturday and Sunday in Princeton. N.J.
