PRINCETON, N.J. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams concluded action at the IC4A/ECAC Championships on a rainy Sunday at Princeton. Junior Kip Yegon led the way for the Mountain Hawks, winning an IC4A title in the 3000 steeplechase on Saturday afternoon. In all, five individuals and both 4x800 relay teams earned All-East distinction with top eight finishes and six athletes posted personal records over the two-day meet.
Yegon set a personal record and won his first IC4A title with a personal record time of 8:53.36. He finished fifth in this event at IC4A's last year.
"I'm really happy for Kip," Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. "We've seen that coming. He had struggled with consistency, but he got into a great race and he was locked in. That's what happens when he gets locked in."
In the same event, sophomore Nick Norton earned a PR with a 15th place finish in 9:19.66.
In the men's 1500m on Saturday, Patriot League champion Sean Brown added All-East honors to his resume, finishing in eighth place with a time of 3:52.06. Freshman Kyle Burke set a PR with a time of 3:54.47, good for 19th place.
The Lehigh men closed Saturday's first day with one top eight finish and two PRs in the 10,000m. Junior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum finished in sixth place to earn All-East honors with a PR time of 30:20.16. Sophomore Seth Slavin also turned in a PR, finishing 10th with a time of 30:58.49.
"Those guys are coming off 10Ks last week," Utesch noted. "They're putting in a lot of miles, so to put together back-to-back races like that is outstanding. That really bodes well for the future; seeing them handle that mileage in back-to-back weeks."
Sunday's men's action was highlighted by a third place finish from the 4x800 relay team, consisting of Burke, junior Ryan Paradise, senior Kyle Berman and fifth year Kyle Kirk. The team posted a time of 7:42.39.
"The men's 4x8 today was outstanding as well," Utesch said. "They were third overall, with some young guys on that team, so that was great to see. It was a great way for them to end their seasons."
Sophomore Anastasios Mouzakis competed in the hammer throw on Saturday, finishing 22nd with a throw of 51.56m.
On the women's side, senior Stephanie Hayes garnered All-East recognition on Saturday with a sixth place finish in the 3000m. She posted a time of 10:08.20.
On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks had four entrants in the 3000 steeplechase, led by sophomore Miranda Royds, who secured a personal record with a time of 10:50.84 to finish in 13th place. Patriot League champion Stacie Nadel finished 15th, junior Ashleigh Crawford took 18th and freshman Nicole Abbondandelo finished in 19th place.
Senior Tyler Bannister earned All-East honors in the high jump, placing seventh while clearing 1.64m,
The 4x800 relay team of juniors Mary Casey and Sophie Antonioli, freshman Jade Sessions and senior Clare Severe had a strong day Sunday, claiming second place with a time of 9:06.75.
"It's really difficult to come off the Patriot League Championships and get up again for another championship meet," Utesch said. "We add final exams into that as well so that makes it even more difficult. I'm pleased with the folks that did go and compete and what they were able to do. Certainly, the women's 4x800 was astounding. It's always awesome to watch that relay and see our girls do so well in it. Every leg competed well."
Severe ran in the 1500 on Saturday, finishing in 20th place in 4:38.42.
In the throws, sophomore Brittany Curtin finished 19th in the hammer on Saturday with a throw of 50.95m but struggled in Sunday's rainy and windy conditions when it came to the discus. Sophomore Brianna Wanbaugh finished 15th in the javelin with a throw of 38.86. Freshmen Jena Reinheimer and Teasha McKoy also competed in the discus on Sunday.
