BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's lacrosse junior Conor Gaffney continued to add accolades to his resume on Thursday as he was named first team Google Cloud Academic All-District® 2 At-Large. It marks the second straight year Gaffney has been named Academic All-District; the two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year went on to be named a third team Academic All-American last season. Gaffney is one of just five Division I men's lacrosse players in the nation named to an Academic All-District At-Large team.
Â
Enjoying a 3.99 GPA as a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Finance, Gaffney became the fifth two-time Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree in Patriot League men's lacrosse history, and first since Brendan Buckley of Army in 2012 and 2013.
Â
The Mount Laurel, N.J. native owns multiple 4.0 semesters and has been named to the Dean's List every semester. He has also been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and garnered the Faculty Athletics Council Award. Gaffney has been named to the Academic All-League team (and the Scholar-Athlete of the Year) in each of the two seasons he was eligible for the award (freshmen are not eligible). Gaffney was one of just three honorees on this year's Academic All-Patriot League team to also be named first team All-League on the field as well.
Â
Gaffney has been just as impressive on the field. He ended a historic 2019 campaign as the program and Patriot League all-time leader for faceoff wins (249), faceoff percentage (69.7) and groundballs (152) in a season. That faceoff percentage is good for fourth nationally. Also in 2019, he tied his own school record for groundballs in a game (16) while becoming the program and Patriot League all-time leader for career groundballs (currently 349), this with one season still remaining.
Â
Named first team All-League for a second straight year and garnering the Patriot League major award Faceoff Specialist of the Year for the first time, Gaffney showed remarkable consistency in 2019 - winning 60 percent or more of his faceoffs in 15-of-17 games. Gaffney won 33-of-44 faceoffs in the Patriot League Tournament, including 18-of-22 (13 straight to end the game) in the championship contest vs. Army West Point. Gaffney scored a big goal in the 10-9 semifinal victory over Boston University, scoring just six seconds after the Terriers netted their third straight goal to take a 5-4 lead. Gaffney was named to the All-Tournament team and was named Faceoff Specialist of the Week three times during the regular season.
Â
Lehigh ended 2019 with a 9-8 record, advancing to its second straight Patriot League Championship Game and fifth in the last eight years. Despite facing several significant injuries, including to key players, the Mountain Hawks battled and went on to beat three nationally-ranked opponents and give themselves a chance until the very end.
