BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's track and field team competed in two meets this weekend. A group of Mountain Hawks traveled to the prestigious Penn Relays beginning on Thursday before hosting the Carol and John Covert Classic Friday and Saturday on Senior Day.
At the Penn Relays, the 4x800m relay team finished 13th overall in the collegiate division. The relay team of freshman Kyle Burke, junior Ryan Paradise, fifth year Kyle Kirk and sophomore Sean Brown finished the race in 7:50.71.
Junior Joey Kelly competed in the pole vault at the Penn Relays, and head coach Matt Utesch said even though Kelly didn't get the result he wanted, he competed in the championship section.
"It shows that he's one of the 12 best kids that get invited to Penn Relays," Utesch said. "That's pretty great."
Fifth year John Tolbert finished 34th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:20.89. Sophomore Evan El-Halawani finished 37th overall in the 400m hurdles, earning a time of 55.53.
At the Covert Classic, junior Kyle Sult finished third overall in the javelin, earning a mark of 52.80m.
The Mountain Hawks had three top-five finishers in the hammer throw, with sophomore Riley LaRiviere finishing second overall with a mark of 50.93m. Junior Adam Freesman finished fourth overall with a 50.41m mark and sophomore Anastasios Mouzakis finished fifth with a mark of 50.30m.
"Freesman did a great job; he had a nice personal record today," Utesch said. "Riley had a PR in the discus too, so those guys did really well."
Senior Alexander Rodgers was Lehigh's top finisher in the shot put with an eighth place finish and a mark of 13.94m.
In the long jump, junior Erik Metz finished fifth overall with a mark of 6.69m. Senior Ryan Givens finished 10th, earning a mark of 5.92m. Metz also finished fifth in the triple jump with a 13.51m mark.
Givens also finished first overall in the high jump with a mark of 2.00m. Freshman Vincent Polignano finished fifth overall in the high jump with a mark of 1.90m, and Sult finished sixth overall with a 1.85m mark.
"Givens finished first in the high jump, which was a pretty easy win for him, but he's another one who if we can get him to the meet, he's probably going to get on the podium," Utesch said.
Sult finished first overall in the pole vault with a 4.25m mark, followed by senior Max Jordan in second place with a 4.25m mark.
On the track, sophomore Michael Mitchell finished second overall in the 3000m steeplechase, earning a time of 9:38.83. Senior Sam Layding finished third overall in the 1500m with a time of 4:04.01.
Freshman Harrison Ernst earned a first place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.32. Freshman Nicholas Crociata finished second overall in the 800m, finishing with a time of 1:57.00.
In the 100m, sophomore Matt Solomon finished first overall with a time of 11.08, earning a personal record. Senior Emre Soybas finished in third, with a time of 11.22.
Lehigh earned a first place finish in the 4x100m relay with a time of 43.29.
"Matt ran a great 100m today, and our 4x100m looked really good," Utesch said. "I'm pretty pleased with where we are."
At the conclusion of the Covert Classic, the graduating seniors were recognized in a ceremony commemorating senior day. The Mountain Hawks who were honored were Bart Bancewicz, Kyle Berman, Ryan Givens, Max Jordan, Sam Layding, Alexander Rodgers, Emre Soybas and Clay Stabolepszy.
"This senior class has probably seen the biggest shift in culture from when they were freshmen to when they were seniors, and they're largely responsible for it," Utesch said. "They've done an amazing job leading the team and really showing what a Division I program should look like. I can't thank them enough and I'm really proud of them."
Next weekend, Lehigh will travel to Worcester, Mass., to compete in the Patriot League Championships, hosted by Holy Cross. Last season, the Mountain Hawks finished fifth overall at the Patriot League Championships.
