Mountain Hawks return to New Jersey to battle Seton Hall in Wednesday doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third straight Wednesday, the Lehigh softball team will venture to the Garden State for a non-league doubleheader. After taking two from Rider on April 10 and Princeton April 17, the Mountain Hawks will travel to South Orange to battle Seton Hall in a twin bill beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Essex Country Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.
Wednesday's doubleheader marks a return to South Orange for the Mountain Hawks, who split their season-opening doubleheader with the Pirates on Feb. 22. Lehigh pounded out 32 hits on the day and won game one 8-4 before dropping game two 5-4 on a Janae Barracato walk-off home run.
Freshman Jaelynn Chesson went 7-for-8 over the two games to kick off her college career. Senior Jennifer Stoll had a career-high three hits in game one while junior Mary-Hannah Smith totaled four hits on the day and homered in game two.
Lehigh enters Wednesday's action at 18-24 on the season. The Mountain Hawks went 3-1 last week, taking two at Princeton before splitting a doubleheader with Stony Brook at Leadership Park on Saturday. Lehigh returns to Patriot League play with three critical games at Holy Cross this weekend and will use Wednesday's doubleheader as an opportunity to prepare for its final six league games, all of which will be played on the road.
In four games last week, Lehigh was led offensively by senior Ashley Rabago, who had six hits and three runs scored. Smith drove in six runs, all six of which came in the Princeton doubleheader. Sophomore Payton Alsbrooks supplied the offense against Stony Brook with her two-run double the difference in a 2-1 game-one win.
Chesson and Smith have been Lehigh's top hitters overall this season as both are hitting over .350 with a combined six home runs and 41 RBIs.
Junior Parker Boyd and freshman Gabriella Nori combined to allow just seven earned runs in 26 innings last week, while combining for 25 strikeouts. For the season, Boyd and Nori have fanned 111 and 110, respectively and both have walked 39. Boyd is 10-9 with a 3.05 ERA, while Nori is 7-12 with a 3.92.
Seton Hall comes in at 19-21 overall. The Pirates won the final two games of their three-game series at Providence over the weekend. The teams split a doubleheader Thursday before Seton Hall won Sunday's series finale 5-4 in eight innings.
Hailey Arteaga leads Seton Hall with a .381 average and 29 RBIs. Barracato is second in batting at .333, while Baylee Allender has a team-best seven home runs.
Reganne Camp is the top pitcher for the Pirates with an 8-10 record, 4.09 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 106 innings.
Lehigh leads the all-time series with Seton Hall 7-3.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader Lehigh will head to Holy Cross for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. A doubleheader is set for noon Saturday with a single game to be played at noon on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks enter the next-to-last weekend of the regular season at 5-7 in the league, which ties them with Colgate for fourth place.
