The victory was a milestone one for Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan, who picked up the 800th win of his career. Troyan is in his 24th season and has led Lehigh to 11 Patriot League Tournament titles. His career record now stands at 800-444-7.
Freshman Jaelynn Chesson went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two RBIs and junior Emily Preble added two hits.
The Mountain Hawks totaled 21 hits over the two games Wednesday, but let an early 7-1 lead get away in a 9-7 setback in the opener. Lehigh is now 19-25 on the season.
Both games saw Lehigh do most of its offensive damage in the first three innings. In game two, Chesson started a two-out rally in the first inning with a double to right center. She then scored on a single up the middle by junior Lexi van Ooyen.
Lehigh opened the second inning with back-to-back hits and after a sacrifice bunt by Preble put two in scoring position, sophomore Payton Alsobrooks brought senior Jennifer Stoll home with a RBI bunt single to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks' lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth when junior Reva Alderman doubled to left with one out. Two Seton Hall errors on the play allowed van Ooyen and Alderman to score.
Preble led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line. With runners on second and third and two outs, Chesson singled to center bringing home two insurance runs to put Lehigh up by six.
Making her first start since March 16 and just her fourth of the season, Sorem took care of the rest. She allowed just three hits, while walking four and striking out seven to improve to 2-2 on the season. Both of Sorem's wins this year have been shutouts. Sorem stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and then when Seton Hall loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, got Janae Barracato to fly out to left field to end the game.
Lehigh started fast in game one, but the contest eventually turned into a slugfest with the Mountain Hawks and Pirates combining for 16 runs on 21 hits.
A two-out RBI single by sophomore Allyson Dibsie gave Lehigh the early 1-0 lead in the first, but Seton Hall scored a run in its half of the first.
Lehigh went back in front with two runs in the second on a RBI single by Alsobrooks and a ground out by junior Mary-Hannah Smith, and added four more in the third on a Stoll RBI double and a three-run home run to left by Alderman, her first of the season.
Katherine Matthys chipped into Lehigh's 7-1 lead with a three-run triple in the bottom of the third and the Pirates took the lead with a five-run fourth. All five runs scored with two outs. Matthys tied the game with a RBI single, while Baylee Allender came home with the go-ahead run stealing home as part of a successful double steal.
Lehigh had eight hits in the first three innings but was held hitless through the next three. Chesson and van Ooyen opened the seventh with back-to-back singles to put the tying runs aboard, but Madison Strunk got a double play ground ball and a ground ball to third base to end the game.
Junior Parker Boyd struck out nine over six innings for Lehigh but was charged with eight earned runs on 11 hits as she took the loss.
Chrisa Head earned the win in relief for Seton Hall (20-22), while Strunk was credited with a save.
Senior Ashley Rabago and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich both had two hits to lead Lehigh in game one.
The Mountain Hawks return to Patriot League play this weekend when they travel to Holy Cross for a critical Patriot League series. Lehigh and Holy Cross will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday with start times both days set for noon. The Mountain Hawks enter the weekend tied for fourth place with Colgate in the Patriot League standings at 5-7.
