Mountain Hawks complete weekend sweep of Bucknell with 6-4 win

4/21/2019 5:33:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A Tyler Schreiner second-inning grand slam helped the Lehigh baseball team jump out to a quick lead, and the Mountain Hawks wouldn't look back as they completed the weekend sweep of visiting Bucknell with a 6-4 win on Sunday at J. David Walker Field. Mike Maguire added a fifth-inning solo shot, the Mountain Hawks' fifth home run of the weekend, which proved to be the difference. Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Luke Rettig got his second straight win on the mound, going five innings and allowing three runs.

With Lehigh's two home runs on Sunday, it extended its Patriot League lead to 33 on the season.

"It's great because we took it one game at a time this weekend," said head coach Sean Leary. "We got the first one and then they refocused and got back after game two. This morning, I was cautious about a letdown, just because they had such an emotional day yesterday. We talked about how it's great what you accomplished, but you really haven't done anything today. We've got to win today; we have a good starter on the mound and feeling really confident with Luke out there with a deep bullpen to go to after Luke.

"We just said, make sure we're focused from that very first inning. To our credit, Luke went out and set the tone, and then Tyler came up with a huge hit early in that game."

Schreiner finished the day 3-of-4 with his first-career home run, four RBIs and two runs scored, needing just a triple for the cycle. Five other Mountain Hawks had a hit apiece. Included was Tony Gallo, whose second-inning single made him nine for his last nine at the plate. He also walked in the third inning, marking 10 straight plate appearances reaching base.

After a scoreless start, Lehigh staged a rally in the second. Ryan Malloy and Gallo opened the inning with singles, then with Quinn McKenna trying to sacrifice the runner to second and third, he reached on an error to load the bases. That set the stage for Schreiner clearing the bases for his first long ball of the season, and career.

Rettig took the momentum to the mound, striking out the side in the top of the third. Then, he faced just three batters in the fourth – inducing an inning-ending double play.

Bucknell got on the board in the fifth, but Maguire gave Lehigh a four-run lead once again with his fourth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the inning.

The Bison added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull within 5-4, but the Mountain Hawks added a key insurance goal in the eighth. Schreiner opened the inning with a double, then advanced to third on a bunt single from Matt Hand, and scored on a throwing error to give Lehigh a big insurance run.

Bucknell got one man on in the top of the ninth, but Peter Woltersdorf wasn't fazed and finished off the 2.2 inning save.

"Guys get hot and we don't move them because we figure it's going to give other guys opportunities for RBIs," said Leary. "Today, they pitched Tony pretty carefully and all of a sudden, you get to a point where Tyler's got to be the guy. To our guys' credit, Quinn has come through a little bit in the last couple weeks, Tyler now today. Matt Hand for a couple series was the guy coming through in those spots. We like the depth and length of our lineup right now."

With the weekend sweep, the Mountain Hawks are right back within striking distance of both Holy Cross and Lafayette, who currently occupy the third and fourth spots in the Patriot League standings in the quest for a league tournament berth. Lehigh is now 8-9 in league play, Holy Cross entered the day 8-6 while Lafayette entered 7-7. There are still eight regular-season Patriot League games remaining.

The Mountain Hawks head outside the league for their next action, as they host Coppin State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
