BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Once early morning rains dissipated, Lehigh and Stony Brook played two tightly-contested games Saturday at Leadership Park. A two-run double by sophomore Payton Alsobrooks lifted Lehigh to a 2-1 win in the opener. The Mountain Hawks out-hit the Seawolves 9-5 in game two, but ultimately fell 3-0.
Saturday's split moves the Mountain Hawks to 18-24 on the season, while Stony Brook is now 22-15. The game one victory, moved Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan to 799 wins for his career.
Junior Parker Boyd allowed the first two Seawolves to reach base in the first inning of game one, with Irene Rivera's RBI ground out putting the visitors in front 1-0.
Lehigh put the leadoff batter on base in the second and third innings but could not score. In the fourth, junior Mary-Hannah Smith reached on an error to lead off. A fielder's choice, a single and a ground out put runners on second and third with two outs when Alsobrooks hit a blooper into shallow right field that fell in allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score.
Boyd took care of the rest, allowing just a walk over the final three innings to lock down her 10th victory of the season. She allowed just one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks managed six hits off Melissa Rahrich, with Alsobrooks going 2-for-3 to lead the way.
"We got down early in the game but were able to come back," Troyan said. "And we were able to hold onto that lead once we got it as well."
Lehigh had plenty of opportunities in game two, especially early, but the Mountain Hawks failed to capitalize on back-to-back infield hits to open the home first and then a one-out double by sophomore Allyson Dibsie in the second. The Mountain Hawks then put two on in the third and eventually loaded the bases with two outs, but with the wind blowing in at Leadership Park, a fly ball off the bat of freshman Jaelynn Chesson was caught in left field to end the threat.
Freshman Gabriella Nori retired the first 10 Seawolves in game two before walking Katelyn Corr with one out in the fourth. Rahrich followed with a double to right, scoring Corr to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
Jourdin Hering added a two-out two-run single in the fifth to extend Stony Brook's lead to 3-0. Lehigh finished with nine hits but left nine runners on base. The Mountain Hawks brought Alsobrooks to the plate as the tying run in the sixth but she flew out to center field to end the threat.
"We left nine on base and we out-hit them, but it's the run column that matters," Troyan said. "We couldn't come up with the big clutch hit when we needed to. We had plenty of opportunities. Jaelynn hit a ball with the bases loaded that would've been out on most days but it got caught up in the wind. (Stony Brook) had to deal with the wind as well. We're playing much better softball overall, but we need to cultivate that clutch gene in some way."
Nori allowed three runs on three hits in five innings with a walk and seven strikeouts, before giving way to Boyd who threw two scoreless innings of relief.
"Parker is starting to get better and better," Troyan said. "It was good to see her come back into that second game just to build up some endurance. We had Gabi (Nori) on a pitch count but she pitched well save for a couple of pitches."
Lehigh will close out its stretch of six straight non-league games with a visit to Seton Hall on Wednesday with first pitch for game one set for 3:30 p.m. from South Orange, N.J. The Mountain Hawks and Pirates split a doubleheader in New Jersey on February 22.
