PRINCETON, N.J. – For the second straight Wednesday the Lehigh softball team played a midweek doubleheader in New Jersey. Just like last week at Rider, the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a run-rule win in game one before winning a tighter game in game two to sweep Princeton at Class of 1895 Field. Lehigh scored a season-high 12 runs in a 12-1, five-inning win in the opener, then won the nightcap 4-2.
Seniors Ashley Rabago and Jennifer Stoll both had four hits on the day, while junior Mary-Hannah Smith drove in six runs, including a two-run home run in game two that proved to be the difference.
Lehigh improves to 17-23 with the sweep.
Game one saw the Mountain Hawks score 12 unanswered runs after Princeton took the lead in the bottom of the first when Megan Donahey led off with a single and scored on a Keeley Walsh two-out triple.
Stoll delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the second to tie the game and started a six-run fourth inning with a RBI single that gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
The top of the fourth inning began with junior Lexi van Ooyen reaching on an error. Stoll singled her home and junior Reva Alderman and Rabago followed with RBI singles to give Lehigh a 4-1 lead. Two batters after Rabago, Smith hit a two-run double to right to put Lehigh 6-1. A sacrifice fly by freshman Jaelynn Chesson gave the Mountain Hawks a 7-1 lead.
Lehigh put game one out of reach with five runs in the fifth. The Mountain Hawks scored two runs on Princeton wild pitches and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich and Smith delivered back-to-back RBI singles.
Junior Parker Boyd allowed a run on seven hits in five innings to notch her ninth win of the season. Boyd struck out four and did not walk a batter. Donahey had three of Princeton's seven hits, while Stoll and Rabago combined to go 5-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
The Mountain Hawks scored a run in the top of the first of game two when van Ooyen singled home Barjaktarovich with two outs; and added a second run in the second on a RBI fielder's choice by Barjaktarovich.
Princeton (12-19) pulled a run back in the fourth inning as Kaitlyn Waslawski singled home Allison Harvey, who led off the inning with a double.
Rabago led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle and two batters later Smith homered down the left field line, her second of the season, to put Lehigh up 4-1.
Freshman Gabriella Nori went five innings in the circle, allowing a run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Boyd came on in relief in the sixth and gave up a two-out run on a single, a stolen base and a Waslawski single, which cut Lehigh's lead to 4-2; but Boyd set down the Tigers in order in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.
Lehigh out-hit Princeton 8-4 in game two, led by Stoll's 2-for-3 effort.
The Mountain Hawks will return to Leadership Park on Saturday to host Stony Brook in a non-league doubleheader. The start time for game one has been moved up to noon.
