BETHLEHEM Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will begin a stretch of six straight games against non-league opponents with a doubleheader at Princeton Wednesday, with game one set for a 3 p.m. start from Class of 1895 Field in Princeton, N.J.
Lehigh fell to 15-23 overall and 5-7 in the Patriot League after dropping two of three games to Army West Point last weekend, including a 5-3 setback in Sunday's series finale. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to regroup as they enter a stretch of non-league games. Lehigh's Patriot League bye week comes this weekend so the Mountain Hawks will follow Wednesday's twin bill with a home non-league doubleheader against Stony Brook on Saturday and then will visit Seton Hall next Wednesday before resuming league play at Holy Cross April 27-28.
On Sunday, Lehigh honored its three seniors and battled back from an early 3-0 deficit, but the Mountain Hawks gave up single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and were unable to capitalize on several late scoring chances.
Freshman Jaelynn Chesson, junior Lexi van Ooyen and sophomore Payton Alsobrooks drove in first inning runs Sunday against Army, with Chesson and van Ooyen both tallying two hits on the day.
Van Ooyen was 3-for-6 over the three games versus Army, while Chesson was 4-for-10 and drove in two runs, including a game-winning RBI double in Saturday's second game.
Chesson continues to lead Lehigh in overall batting average (.400), along with runs scored (16), home runs (four) and RBIs (20). She and junior Mary-Hannah Smith are tied for the team lead with 10 doubles. Smith his hitting .366 overall and leads the Patriot League with 45 hits.
In the circle, freshman Gabriella Nori pitched well over 13.2 innings against Army, going 1-1 while striking out 11 and walking just two. Nori also pitched well in a 2-1 win at Rider last Wednesday where she allowed just one hit through 6.2 innings. Junior Parker Boyd will look to bounce back after two rough starts against the Black Knights. Boyd did throw a five-inning shutout at Rider a week ago.
Princeton is 12-17 overall and 8-4 in the Ivy League and is coming off a series win at Penn, which moved the Tigers into third place in the Ivy standings. The Tigers won a single game Friday and then split a doubleheader on Saturday, dropping the nightcap in five innings.
Kaylee Grant leads the Tigers with a .412 batting average and has contributed 15 RBIs, while Keeley Walsh has a team-best two home runs and 18 RBIs. Alli Blanchard and Allie Reynolds have done the majority of the pitching for Princeton this season.
For the second consecutive week, Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan will face off against one of his former players, as Lisa (Sweeney) Van Ackeren '09, a four-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, is in her seventh season as Princeton's head coach.
Princeton and Lehigh have three common opponents this season. Both teams went 0-2 versus Arizona State. Lehigh went 0-3 versus Bucknell, while Princeton dropped an early season contest to the Bison. Both teams have played doubleheaders against Rider this month, with Lehigh sweeping last week and Princeton splitting the week before.
The Tigers lead the all-time series 30-21 but the Mountain Hawks have had better success in recent years, winning all 10 meetings since the start of the 2012 season. Last year, Lehigh blanked Princeton 5-0 at Leadership Park behind a three-hit shutout from senior Emily Sorem.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be streamed on ESPN+.
