BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game with a three-run first inning but visiting Army West Point scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Mountain Hawks 5-3 Sunday in their series finale at Leadership Park.
Army's Ashley Yoo broke the 3-3 tie with a sixth inning sacrifice fly, while Lehigh failed to bring runners home from third with less than two outs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The loss drops Lehigh to 15-23 overall and 5-7 in the Patriot League after four weekends of league play. Army improves to 20-24 overall and 6-6 in the league.
The Black Knights raced out to an early 3-0 lead behind an early error and infield single. Taylor Drayton drove in a run with an infield single and then Grace Mattimore followed with a two-run single to put Army up by three and chase Lehigh starter Parker Boyd.
Lehigh answered with three in the bottom half of the inning as senior Ashley Rabago and junior Mary-Hannah Smith drew consecutive walks. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson followed with a single to center scoring Rabago. Two batters after Chesson, junior Lexi van Ooyen tripled to right field, scoring Chesson to bring Lehigh within 3-2. Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks then hit a slow chopper up the first base line that stayed fair for an infield single, allowing van Ooyen to score the tying run.
Both teams went to their bullpens early with freshman Gabriella Nori replacing Boyd with one out in the first and Macey Newbary coming in for Renee Poirier in the bottom of the second.
Both Nori and Newbary kept the game deadlocked at 3-3 through five innings. Lehigh had a golden opportunity to go in front, loading the bases with one out in the fifth, but freshman Addie Kittel flew out to center and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich was thrown out trying to score from third to end the threat.
Army West Point regained the lead in the sixth as Jolie Duong led off with a double to right center, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored the go-ahead run on Yoo's sacrifice fly.
Van Ooyen led off the home sixth with a double but ended up stranded at third after failing to score on a pair of infield ground balls.
Taylor Drayton added a RBI single for the Black Knights in the seventh, while Chesson singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Newbary got Kittel to fly out as the tying run to end the game.
Sunday was also Senior Day at Leadership Park as Lehigh honored seniors Ashley Rabago, Emily Sorem and Jennifer Stoll prior to their final home Patriot League game.
Lehigh finished the game with eight hits, led by two from both Chesson and van Ooyen. Nori took the loss allowing two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. She walked two and struck out five.
Newbary earned her second win of the series behind six shutout innings of relief.
The Mountain Hawks will be off from Patriot League play next weekend and will return to action with a Wednesday doubleheader at Princeton, with game time for game one set for 3 p.m.
