Starting pitching excels in Lehigh's doubleheader loss to Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Both starting pitchers excelled on the mound on Saturday, but Lehigh baseball's offense struggled to figure out Navy's pitching, falling 4-1 in Game 1 and 3-0 in Game 2 in 10 innings against the Midshipmen in Patriot League contests at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
Game 1 featured a pitcher's duel between two senior hurlers for most of the outing.
Senior left-hander Ethan Frohman got the starting nod for the Mountain Hawks in the first game and had himself a career afternoon despite allowing four runs and being charged with his first loss of the 20-19 season. Frohman (3-1) allowed the game's first run of the game in the top of the first on an RBI single, but settled in from then on, ending up going 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with a walk, but also tied his career-high eight strikeouts. Frohman also registered his 100th career strikeout in the game, finishing with career total of 104 after his outing.
Noah Song was also on point for the Midshipmen, able to pick up his seventh victory of the 2019 campaign. Song was virtually untouchable for most of the game, going 6 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts before being pulled in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded as Trey Braithwaite took over and earned his seventh save.
Freshman Gerard Sweeney, sophomores Tyler Schreiner, Quinn McKenna and Eric Cichocki, and senior Ryan Malloy each tallied a single hit, as the Mountain Hawks totaled five on the afternoon for the first game. The game's lone run of the game came off a Tony Gallo sacrifice-fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Game 2 also featured a pitcher's duel between Levi Stoudt and Navy reliever Jackson Zoch.
Stoudt was excellent in his start, throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing just six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Zoch took over for starter Colin Taeschner and went six innings of relief, allowing no runs on just one hit, which came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Ryan Malloy singled to open the inning. Malloy's hit resulted in him getting over to second base on a Tony Gallo SAC bint, and then after Tyler Schreiner intentionally walked, Eric Cichocki lined out to center field to end the inning and eliminate the chance of getting the walk-off win.
The Midshipmen took the lead in the top of the 10th inning on a Christian Hodge three-run home run, his league-leading 10th of the season. The home run was off of Lehigh's Jason Reynolds (2-5) who came into the game in the eighth inning in relief of Stoudt.
The Mountain Hawks were unable to get a runner aboard in the bottom of the 10th as Navy came away with the 3-0 win and doubleheader sweep at Walker Field.
Lehigh will aim to avoid the sweep at home and get an important victory on Sunday morning when the teams square off at Walker Field beginning at 10 a.m. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
