BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing its first home Patriot League games of the season, Lehigh suffered the rare feat of being swept in a Patriot League doubleheader as the Mountain Hawks dropped two to Bucknell Saturday at Leadership Park. Bucknell's Raeanne Geffert threw a no-hitter to lead the Bison to a 2-0 win in game one. The Bison then took game two 14-3 in five innings.
The losses mark the first time Lehigh has been swept in a Patriot League regular season home doubleheader since 1998, when Bucknell took two from the Mountain Hawks at Kaufman Field. Lehigh is now 10-17 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell improves to 15-15 overall and 5-0 in the league.
Game one saw Bucknell plate single runs in the first and fifth innings. Lauren Hadley drove in both. Allyse Volpe led off the game with a single to right, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Hadley bunt. Hadley later doubled to right center with two outs in the fifth to score Nicole Rivait.
Geffert retired the first 12 Mountain Hawks she faced before walking freshman Jaelynn Chesson to open the fifth. She also walked freshman Carley Barjaktarovich in the fifth and Chesson again in the seventh but the Bison played solid defense behind her. Shortstop Anna Gimmestad helped preserve the no-hitter reaching into the hole to snare a hard line drive by junior Mary-Hannah Smith leading off the seventh. Geffert walked three and struck out four in her no-hit effort.
Junior Parker Boyd allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Bucknell jumped on Lehigh early in game two with three straight hits, including a two-run double by Hadley as the Bison led 3-0 after half an inning.
Lehigh attempted to battle back in the bottom of the first, recording back-to-back one out singles from sophomore Payton Alsobrooks and Smith, before Chesson singled to get the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard. Bucknell's Lauren Lichtenwalner was able to limit the damage to one run.
The Bison broke the game open with three runs in the third and six runs in the fourth before adding two more in the fifth. Taylor Wolfgang drove in four runs in the nightcap, while Volpe and Jess Hom were both 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Mountain Hawks kept fighting into the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Melissa Fedorka led off with Lehigh's only extra-base hit of the day, a double to right. She later scored on a throwing error when sophomore Allyson Dibsie reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Karsen O'Rourke singled in a run to bring Lehigh within 14-3, but with the bases loaded, Chesson hit a hard line drive to shortstop that turned into a game-ending double play.
Lehigh and Bucknell will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at Leadership Park with game time set for noon. The game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
