Lehigh moves to 3-0 at Seahawk Softball Classic with wins over UNCW, N.C. A&T

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Lehigh softball team improved to 3-0 at the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic with two wins Saturday at Boseman Field. The Mountain Hawks began their day by building a 5-0 lead against host UNC-Wilmington before holding off a late Seahawk charge to win 5-4. In game two, Lehigh scored four runs in the first and six in the sixth, while Emily Sorem fired a two-hit shutout in a 10-0, six-inning triumph over North Carolina A&T.
Junior Hannah Edwards led Lehigh with four hits and four runs scored over the two games, while classmate Mary-Hannah Smith drove in four runs, including three against North Carolina A&T. With the two victories, Lehigh improves to 4-1 on the season.
Lehigh out-hit UNC-Wilmington 9-8 in its first game of the day as the Mountain Hawks also took advantage of five Seahawk errors.
The Mountain Hawks took the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning as Smith singled through the right side and freshman Jaelynn Chesson added a run-scoring ground out.
Edwards started a three-run rally with a leadoff single in the fifth. Chesson added a single two batters later and the Mountain Hawks plated three runs on singles by freshman Addie Kittel, senior Jennifer Stoll and junior Emily Preble.
In the circle, freshman Gabriella Nori limited UNCW to three hits through the first five innings. She ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with one out after a hit batter and two walks. Junior Parker Boyd came on in relief and hit the first batter she faced before retiring the next two to escape any further damage.
Singles from four of the first five Seahawks to bat in the bottom of the seventh cut Lehigh's lead to 5-2 as Nori re-entered the game in the circle. Nori gave up a two-run single to Anna Hessenthaler to bring UNCW within one, but then got a pop out and a strikeout to end the game.
Nori earned her first career victory, allowing one run on four hits in six innings of work. She walked five and struck out 10.
Junior Lexi van Ooyen recorded two of Lehigh's nine hits against UNC-Wilmington, which falls to 7-9.
The first five Mountain Hawks to come to the plate against North Carolina A&T reached base. Smith plated sophomore Payton Alsobrooks with a double down the left field line and Chesson followed with a single that scored Edwards. A single from junior Reva Alderman made it 3-0 Lehigh and freshman Carley Barjaktarovich capped the inning with a sacrifice fly. In all, Lehigh sent 10 batters to the plate and led 4-0 before the Aggies came to bat.
Mohagony Headen kept Lehigh at bay through the next four innings before the Mountain Hawks broke the game open with a six-run sixth. Barjaktarovich led off with a double and scored when Preble followed with a triple to right. Preble came home on a bunt single by senior Ashley Rabago to extend Lehigh's lead to 6-0. Smith brought two more runs home with a triple to right and then scored on a pinch-hit single by freshman Melissa Fedorka. Lehigh's sixth run of the frame and 10th of the evening came home when Preble reached on an error.
Sorem took care of the rest on the way to her 10th career shutout. She allowed just two singles, walked one and struck out seven in a six-inning effort for her first win of the season.
Edwards was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Smith, Chesson, Barjaktarovich and Preble each had two hits.
North Carolina A&T is now 0-9 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic with two games on Sunday. Lehigh will face UMBC at 8:30 a.m. and UNC-Wilmington at 11 a.m. from Boseman Field.
