Mountain Hawks head to North Carolina for Seahawk Softball Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team heads to Wilmington, N.C. this weekend to compete in the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic. The Mountain Hawks will play five games over three days beginning Friday at Boseman Field and running through Sunday.
Lehigh will open the tournament with games against UMBC (10 a.m.) and host UNC-Wilmington (3 p.m.) on Friday. The Mountain Hawks will face the Seahawks again on Saturday (12:30 p.m.) and will also face North Carolina A&T Saturday (5:30 p.m.) before wrapping up the classic against UMBC on Sunday (10 a.m.).
Freshman Jaelynn Chesson led the offensive charge for the Mountain Hawks, going 7-for-8 on the day with two runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Jennifer Stoll added five hits in seven at-bats and two stolen bases. Lehigh stole 11 bases on the day including 10 in game one of the twin bill. Junior Mary-Hannah Smith hit the lone home run of the day for the Mountain Hawks in game two.
The pitching trio of junior Parker Boyd, senior Emily Sorem and freshman Gabriella Nori combined to allow nine earned runs on 11 hits while totaling eight walks and 13 strikeouts. Boyd and Nori both struck out five in starting efforts, while Sorem closed out the game one win with two innings of hitless, scoreless relief.
UMBC has played just three games over the season's first three weekends. The Retrievers lost their season-opener to Delaware on Feb. 10 and split two games on Sunday, edging Murray State 3-2 before falling to North Carolina State 2-1. Freshman Courtney Coopersmith is the reigning America East Pitcher of the Week after striking out 14 in a losing effort against N.C. State. UMBC was 12-31 a season ago.
Tournament host UNC-Wilmington has been the busiest of the four teams in the field. The Seahawks have played 13 games, going 6-7 over three tournaments. Last weekend UNCW went 1-2 at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C., beating UMass-Lowell and falling to Marshall and Charleston Southern. Janel Gamache is hitting .366 over 13 games with seven doubles and 13 RBIs. Eight different Seahawks have seen time in the circle, led by Rylee Pate (4-2, 2.73 ERA in 43.2 innings).
North Carolina A&T has had a rough going in the early season, dropping its first six games by a combined score of 55-1. Last weekend the Aggies were at the Mercer Black and Orange Challenge where they dropped games to Loyola Chicago, Indiana, Akron and Mercer. Zadaisha Waddell is 5-for-13 through six games and has thrown 9.2 innings in the circle.
Lehigh and UMBC have split 10 games in a series that dates back to 1996. The teams split a doubleheader in 2016 at Leadership Park with the Retrievers winning game one 2-0 and the Mountain Hawks taking the nightcap 4-1. Lehigh is 2-0 all-time against UNC-Wilmington with wins in 2000 and 2008. The Mountain Hawks have never faced North Carolina A&T.
