Lehigh tops UMBC 6-3 in opener at Seahawk Softball Classic, UNCW game rained out

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Lehigh softball teamed opened play at the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic with a 6-3 victory over UMBC Friday morning at UNC-Wilmington's Boseman Field. The Mountain Hawks' second game of the day against host UNC-Wilmington was rained out. Saturday's schedule will remain the same but Lehigh will play a second game on Sunday before heading home.
With Friday's win, Lehigh improves to 2-1 on the season. UMBC falls to 1-3.
The Mountain Hawks fell behind 2-0 as a two-out error led to two unearned runs for UMBC in the top of the first. Lehigh responded immediately, sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame and scoring four runs on four hits while capitalizing on three Retriever errors.
Lehigh put runners on first and second with one out and freshman Jaelynn Chesson continued her torrid start to the season, singling to center to score sophomore Payton Alsobrooks to put the Mountain Hawks on the board. Two batters later, Lehigh pulled even when senior Jennifer Stoll reached on an error, allowing junior Mary-Hannah Smith to score. An infield single by freshman Carley Barjaktarovich brought home Chesson with the go-ahead run. Lehigh added a fourth run when junior Emily Preble reached on an error to lead 4-2 after one.
Chesson started off a two-out rally in the second with a triple to right center as she recorded a hit in her ninth straight plate appearance. Freshman Addie Kittel followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Chesson to give Lehigh a three run advantage. Three consecutive walks by UMBC reliever Valerie Hammett brought home Lehigh's sixth run, with Preble earning the RBI.
UMBC pulled a run back when Kaly Winslow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning, but junior Parker Boyd kept the Retrievers at bay, despite allowing base runners in each of the six innings she worked.
Sophomore Lainey Stephenson allowed a walk and a single in a scoreless seventh inning to earn her first career save. Boyd improved to 2-0 on the season, finishing with a line of three runs (one earned) on seven hits in six innings. She struck out four and walked two.
Lehigh finished with eight hits, but mustered just two singles and a walk over its final four times at bat. Chesson's streak of consecutive at-bats with a hit ended at nine after striking out to open the home fourth, but she finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Alsobrooks and Smith also had two hits against the Retrievers. The Mountain Hawks were 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts, with Stoll, Barjaktarovich and Preble each nabbing one. Lehigh has now stolen 14 bases in 17 attempts over three games.
The Mountain Hawks continue action at the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic on Saturday when they face UNC-Wilmington at 12:30 p.m. and North Carolina A&T at 5:30 p.m.
