Mountain Hawks prep for start of league play with game at Delaware Wednesday

3/19/2019 11:33:00 AM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Back from its spring break trip to Arizona and with Patriot League play set to kick off this weekend, the Lehigh softball team returns to the diamond Wednesday with a short trip to Delaware for a single game. Game time is set for 3 p.m. from Delaware Softball Diamond in Newark, Del.

Following a 5-2 start through its first two weekends of play, the Mountain Hawks ran into some tough competition in Arizona, including four games against nationally-ranked opposition. Lehigh will look to get back on track with its single game Wednesday before opening Patriot League play this weekend with three games at rival Lafayette.

Junior Mary-Hannah Smith led the Mountain Hawks over their 12-game trip, batting .394 (13-for-33) over the 12 games. Smith picked up her 100th career hit in a win over South Dakota on March 8. She leads the Mountain Hawks in batting at .400, including seven extra-base hits and nine RBIs. Freshman Carley Barjaktarovich drove in a team-best five runs on the trip and leads Lehigh with 10 RBIs on the season. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson had eight hits, including three extra-base hits and drove in four over the 12-game swing and is second to Smith with a .396 overall batting average.

In the circle, junior Parker Boyd struck out 30 batters in 30.1 innings last week and owns three wins and a 4.06 ERA for the season. Freshman Gabriella Nori or senior Emily Sorem will likely get the ball against the Blue Hens on Wednesday.

Delaware enters Wednesday's game at 10-12 overall. The Blue Hens went 3-1 over the weekend, splitting a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's on Saturday and sweeping Coppin State on Sunday. Sarah Piening was named CAA Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Coppin State. Piening has been the top pitcher for Delaware with a 7-6 record and 2.73 ERA in 69.1 innings.

Brittney Mendoza has been Delaware's top hitter at .349 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. The Blue Hens will open CAA play at Drexel this weekend.

Delaware leads the all-time series 35-22-1. These teams last met in 2015, a 5-2 Lehigh win in Newark. Scheduled contests between the Mountain Hawks and Blue Hens have been canceled in each of the last three seasons.

Delaware is planning on offering streaming video and live stats for Wednesday's game.

Lehigh will open Patriot League play this weekend with three games at rival Lafayette. A doubleheader is set for Saturday at noon and will be followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
