BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of Lehigh men's lacrosse student-athletes who played integral roles in the Mountain Hawks' 2-0 week were honored on Monday, as senior Craig Chick and freshman Tommy Schelling were named Patriot League Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The award is Chick's second in as many weeks, while it's the first-career weekly honor for Schelling. In addition, Lehigh rose to No. 15 in this week's Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (from 16) and rose to No. 17 in the USILA Coaches Poll (from 20).
Chick has now been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week five times in his career, three coming this season. The Edgewater, Maryland native caused three turnovers in each game last week, a thrilling 13-10 win at No. 15 Rutgers and impressive 15-7 home win over archrival Lafayette. At Rutgers, all three of Chick's caused turnovers came in the final 18:23. With 3:23 left in the third quarter, he caused a turnover and collected a groundball, then scored a goal on the other end less than 20 seconds later to pull the Mountain Hawks within 8-6. That sparked a 4-0 Lehigh run over the final 3:10 of the third to turn an 8-5 deficit into a 9-8 lead. The run extended to 8-2 to end the game, as Chick added two more caused turnovers in the fourth quarter. His final caused turnover came with 2:57 remaining and led to Schelling scoring the game-winning goal with 2:19 on the clock. Chick added a groundball and three caused turnovers vs. the Leopards Sunday. The defense allowed just two goals over the game's first 29:33 and just five over the first 55:18. For the season, Chick owns 29 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers, increasing his career number to 137 (third in NCAA history).
Meanwhile, Schelling's week was highlighted by a big moment at Rutgers when the rookie scored the game-winning goal with 2:19 remaining. Playing in his home state, the Warren, New Jersey native also assisted Lehigh's final goal of the evening at the 30-second mark. He went on to earn his first-career start on Sunday vs. Lafayette. For the season, Schelling owns six goals and three assists.
Senior attackman Lucas Spence, sophomore goaltender James Spence and sophomore faceoff specialist Joel Trucksess all garnered honorable mention recognition as well.
Riding four straight victories, their longest winning streak since 2014, the Mountain Hawks are now 5-3 overall and 3-0 in Patriot League play. Lehigh picked up three straight wins over ranked opponents (No. 16 Colgate, No. 17 Army West Point then No. 15 Rutgers) for the first time since 2013. The Mountain Hawks will hit the road this Saturday to face Navy at 12 p.m.
