Kutler, Preisch beat ranked foes but No. 22 Lehigh falls at No. 2 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior Jordan Kutler and senior Ryan Preisch knocked off top 15-ranked wrestlers but No. 22 Lehigh could only muster two bout wins against No. 2 Oklahoma State as the Cowboys claimed a 27-6 victory Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Facing the second-ranked team in the country with a lineup that featured nine ranked wrestlers, Lehigh gave up just three bonus points and dropped three matches by two points or fewer.

The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 7-9 on the dual season, while the Cowboys remain perfect at 12-0.

"Things didn't go our way but we have to make them go our way," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "There were no bad calls. We were in three matches we could have won. That's tough because in this sport you can't wrestle based on how you feel. If you wrestle how you feel you're never going to win a big match. You've got to push through those big moments. We'll learn from tonight. This is a great place to wrestle. It's a lot of fun. Our guys enjoyed it but you have to find a way to win those tight matches."

Oklahoma State claimed the first six bouts to take a 20-0 lead through 165. Fourth-ranked Nick Piccininni opened things with a 16-5 major decision over Luke Resnick at 125. Second-ranked Daton Fix followed with a 7-1 win over sophomore Brandon Paetzell at 133. A major decision by Kaid Brock over junior Ryan Pomrinca at 141 and a 13-8 win for fifth-ranked Kaden Gfeller over senior Cortlandt Schuyler left Lehigh down 14-0.

Lehigh was in the matches at 157 and 165 but came up just short of victories. Freshman Josh Humphreys trailed Wyatt Sheets 5-3 late when he beat the final buzzer with a cradle to send the match to sudden victory. Sheets grabbed Humphreys' leg and won a scramble for the decisive takedown in a 7-5 decision.

Senior Gordon Wolf dropped a back-and-forth 10-9 decision to Andrew Shomers at 165. Wolf scored first and used a strong ride to build up a hefty riding time advantage. Shomers came back with two takedowns and two reversals over the final two periods. Wolf reversed midway through the third to tie the match 8-8 and take the lead with his locked in riding time, but a late Shomers reversal gave the Cowboy a 10-9 victory.

Kutler put Lehigh on the board with a 2-1 decision over No. 5 Joe Smith at 174. The decisive point came in the first period by way of a penalty for unnecessary roughness for hands to the face by Smith. The wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third periods with Kutler using strong positioning to pick up the victory.

"Jordan has wrestled Joe a couple times," Santoro said. "Those two guys are so evenly matched that any little thing could mean the match. Jordan did a nice job while wrestling banged up this weekend. He fought through it and did a nice job."

Preisch followed with an 8-3 decision over 11th-ranked Jacobe Smith at 184. Preisch scored a first period takedown off a Smith shot and built up riding time with strong work on top. He got reversed early in the second but escaped to lead 3-2 after two. An escape, a penalty point for fleeing the mat and an insurance counter takedown late sealed the decision, which brought Lehigh within 20-6.

"Today was the best I've seen Ryan move his feet all year," Santoro said. "That was really good to see and now he can build off of that."

Oklahoma State took the final two bouts as Dakota Geer rallied from an early deficit to pick up a 13-5 major decision over sophomore Chris Weiler at 197. The final bout of the dual saw second-ranked Derek White use a second period takedown, awarded after an officials' review, to hold off sophomore Jordan Wood 3-2.

"We've been in some really tough gyms against some really good teams," Santoro said. "We've wrestled the best and now it's about applying that to the postseason. We have two big conference duals ahead of us and will need this week to prepare for them."

The Mountain Hawks will be off from competition next weekend and will return to action when they host Army West Point on Military Appreciation Day at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, Saturday February 16, with match time set for 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
