BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After an outstanding weekend that helped Lehigh baseball take two of three games from Mount St. Mary's, senior outfielder Ryan Malloy was named Patriot League Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
The weekly award is Malloy's first of his career and comes after he played his 90th career game in the Brown and White.
For the weekend in the three-game series, Malloy hit .500 (7-for-14) with five runs scored, a home run, a double and four RBIs. He also slugged .786 with a .500 on-base percentage.
In Lehigh's first game against the Mountaineers on Saturday, Malloy went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. On Sunday, he went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI in the first game of the doubleheader, and helped the Mountain Hawks win the second game, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
"Ryan had a big weekend for us, but most importantly, every hit he had was in a big situation," said head coach Sean Leary. "His home run put us ahead in Game 1, his double was the go-ahead run in Game 3. It just seemed like every time we needed a big hit, Ryan stepped up and came through for us.
"With this award, Ryan is definitely rewarded for his excellent play, but it was also integral in the two wins."
After his first five games of the season, Malloy leads the team in almost every offensive category including batting average (.400), hits (8), triples (1), RBIs (5), total bases (14) and slugging (.700).
The weekly award is the Mountain Hawks' second overall of the season and first Player of the Week Award nod of the year. The last member of the program to be honored was Jeff Shanfeldt on May 7 of last season. In addition to Malloy's award, junior right-hander Jason Reynolds received an honorable mention for his seven inning start on Sunday, striking out seven and earning his first win of the season.
