Men's Basketball Team Celebration

Lehigh travels to Army West Point for clash of contenders

2/1/2019 3:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a thrilling overtime win at Lafayette Wednesday night, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains on the road Saturday at Army West Point. Gametime is 1 p.m. on Stadium and the Patriot League Network. Saturday's game features Lehigh at 7-2 in league play against Army coming in at 6-3. Junior Jordan Cohen has been the story for the Mountain Hawks over the last week, scoring 32 points vs. Boston University last Saturday then 33 against the Leopards on Wednesday. Included were 14 of Lehigh's 18 points in overtime to lead his team to its second road overtime victory of January.

Along with the normal Patriot League Network, Saturday's game will also be televised on Stadium's Over-The-Air stations across the nation. For a complete list of stations, please click here (PDF) (TV) and here (PDF) (Cable). Stadium can be found on Verizon Fios Channel 820 across a good majority of the nation.

Cohen absolutely dazzled down the stretch on Wednesday. Including the end of regulation, he scored 21 of Lehigh's final 30 points, all coming in just 7:58 of action. In overtime, the Mountain Hawks had nine possessions and scored every time, finishing 6-of-6 from the field (all field goals by Cohen) and 6-of-6 from the free throw line (with two free throws each from sophomore James Karnik, senior Kyle Leufroy and Cohen). Cohen's 14 points in overtime were just three shy of tying the NCAA record for an extra session. He finished 14-of-19 from the floor and has now connected on 26-of-33 (78.8 percent) over the last two games.

Senior Lance Tejada added 17 points, 12 coming in the first half, while Karnik continued his strong play with 15, shooting 6-of-8 from the field. Leufroy added 11 points, five rebounds and two steals while freshman Jeameril Wilson recorded seven points (on 3-of-3 shooting), two rebounds and a career-high two steals. Each of the steals led to immediate baskets on the other end, including a steal and ensuing slam with 2:31 remaining in regulation to even the score at 67. Lafayette's Alex Petrie hit a tough shot in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, setting the stage for Cohen's heroics.

A game of runs saw Lehigh hold the lead for much of the first half. The advantage reached eight early in the second, but a 12-0 Leopards' run gave them the lead, which they would hold from the 16:55 mark of the second half until 1:54 on the second-half clock when Cohen converted a three-point play to give Lehigh a 70-69 lead. In the end, the win was Lehigh's eighth straight over Lafayette. Leufroy joined 2018 graduate Kahron Ross as the only two players in school history to go 4-0 at Lafayette in their careers while he became the only player to post four regular-season sweeps.

Lehigh shot 52.3 percent from the field (34-of-65), marking the fifth time in its last games it eclipsed 50 percent. The win marked head coach Brett Reed's 109th career Patriot League victory, moving him past American's Joe Jones and into third place in league history.

Now exactly halfway through their league slate (nine of 18 games), the Mountain Hawks improved to 3-1 on the road in league play. At 7-2 in the league, Lehigh remains tied for first in the standings (with Bucknell) and one game ahead of Army West Point at 6-3. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will square off for the first time Saturday (with the teams also playing on Feb. 20 at Lehigh). This Saturday is Lehigh's first game in February as it looks to improve its stellar 22-3 record in February dating back to February of 2016.

Army West Point has impressed during Patriot League play, owning a 6-3 record, just one game behind Lehigh and Bucknell in first. The Black Knights are 11-11 overall. Most recently, they lost at Colgate, 76-56, snapping a four-game winning streak. Army is 8-2 at home on the season, 4-1 in league play. Matt Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.0 and 8.6, respectively. Tommy Funk comes in at 12.2 points and 3.5 boards, along with 139 assists, which leads the league. Jordan Fox is averaging 9.6 points per game. The Black Knights are middle-of-the-pack in the league in both scoring offense (72.4, sixth) and defense (72.2, fifth).

Lehigh defeated Army last Feb. 17, 84-53, marking its largest-ever margin of victory against the Black Knights. That win helped avenge the Mountain Hawks' loss at Army less than a month earlier. Overall, Lehigh has won four of the last five and six of the last eight against the Black Knights, which includes a 3-1 record at Army -- the loss coming last season. Army still leads the all-time series, 64-43. The first-ever meeting between the two sides came in 1906-07, a 26-24 Lehigh victory. Army won the next matchup in 1914-15 by a 19-6 final.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks have a quick turnaround as they host Office Night Presented by Ricoh this Monday at 7 p.m. vs. Colgate. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. Fans can purchase tickets online by clicking here.
