WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Fourteen Lehigh wrestlers, including several regulars, took to the mats at Sunday's Wilkes Open. It was a productive afternoon for the Mountain Hawks as 13 of the 14 entrants placed in the top six in their respective weight classes.

Sophomore Dan Moran led the way for the Mountain Hawks, claiming the title at 141 in his first action of the season as he works his way back from injury. Moran wrestled four bouts on the day, opening with two major decisions, before beating unrostered Theo Powers 5-1 in the semifinals and Joseph Rosetti of Williams 3-1 in the finals.

Lehigh had three runners-up on Sunday. Sophomore Jaret Lane won his first three bouts at 133 but fell in the finals to top 10-ranked Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State. Freshman Brian Meyer also won three bouts at 165 before running into a Nittany Lion wrestler as Meyer dropped a 6-3 decision to Joe Lee in the finals.

The Mountain Hawks had four entrants at 149 with three of the four placing top six. Sophomore Jimmy Hoffman won his first four bouts, including a 1-0 victory over junior Luke Karam in the semifinals. The only point of the match came on riding time as Hoffman rode out the second period. Hoffman medically forfeited his finals match to Jarod Verkleeren of Penn State.

Karam won his other three matches on Sunday to claim third place at 149. Also placing at the weight was freshman Paul Watkins, who went 3-2 while competing unattached. Sophomore JT Cooley was the fourth Mountain Hawk to compete at 149.

Lehigh wrestlers shared third and fourth place at 165 and 174 rather than battling in a placement match. At 165, junior Trey Cornish and freshman Luca Frinzi both dropped semifinals and fell into the 3rd/4th match. True freshmen Edmond Ruth and Jake Logan suffered the same fate at 174 as both dropped semifinal matches against Penn State wrestlers, with Logan losing by fall to top-ranked Mark Hall.

Rounding out the Lehigh contingent at Wilkes was freshman Eli Jones, who took third at 197, freshman AJ Burkhart, who claimed fourth place at 157 and sophomore Eli Grape, who placed sixth at 184.

The Mountain Hawks return to dual competition at the South Beach Duals, Dec. 29-30 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Lehigh is slated to face Duke, No. 15 Minnesota and No. 19 Missouri.
