11/8/2019 11:25:00 AM | Men's Wrestling
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the fourth straight year, Lehigh will travel to Troy, N.Y. to take part in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, which will be held Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. The Mountain Hawks have 19 projected entrants for their second competition date of the 2019-20 season. Lehigh opened its season last week with a combination of 27 attached and unattached wrestlers competing at the Princeton Open. Sophomore Jaret Lane won the 133-pound title and senior Chase Gallik reached the finals at 165, leading the way for Lehigh's 13 place winners. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a second consecutive EIWA team title in 2018-19. Lehigh claimed three individual titles and went on to crown three All-Americans at the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh.Â
Â
The Journeymen Collegiate Classic will once again feature a tournament-style round-robin format. Wrestlers will compete in 6-8 man round robin brackets that will be followed by crossover matches.
Â
Competing teams include: Arizona State, Bloomsburg, Brown, Davidson, George Mason, Hofstra, Indiana, Lehigh, Lock Haven, Long Island, Nebraska, Old Dominion, Oklahoma, The Citadel and Utah Valley, plus Division II power Pitt-Johnstown.
Â
Lehigh will be competing in Troy, N.Y. for the 11th time in the last 13 years. The Mountain Hawks went 17-5 in duals in their seven previous trips to the Northeast Duals. Twelve Mountain Hawks who competed here last year are expected to take part in this year's Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Senior Jordan Kutler won his pool in each of the last two seasons.
Â
Lehigh will once again face one of the nation's toughest schedules. Six of Lehigh's 12 confirmed duals are against teams currently ranked in the NWCA Top 25, including three home duals against top eight foes. Other ranked teams competing at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic are No. 5 Nebraska, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 22 Lock Haven and No. 25 Old Dominion.
Â
The first in-season rankings by InterMat have wrestlers ranked in five of 10 weight classes, led by senior Jordan Kutler, who is ranked second at 174. The Mountain Hawks have six wrestlers ranked by both FloWrestling and The Open Mat and seven in the Amateur Wrestling News preseason rankings. In addition to Kutler, Brandon Paetzell (125), Josh Humphreys (157), Jake Jakobsen (197) and Jordan Wood (285) are ranked across the board by all four outlets. Wood is ranked third by all four.
Â
Prior to the start of the season, head coach Pat Santoro announced fifth-year senior Jordan Kutler (Sparta, N.J.) and fourth-year junior Jordan Wood (Gilbertsville, Pa.) as captains for the 2019-20 season. Both Jordan's are two-time EIWA Champions. Kutler is a two-time All-American with sixth and seventh place finishes to his credit, while Wood earned his first All-America honor with a fourth place finish March.
Â
Lehigh enters the 2019-20 season with a 38 man roster, one that features plenty of experience to go along with young talent. The Mountain Hawks return a pair of All-Americans in captains Jordan Kutler and Jordan Wood; three EIWA Champions, with sophomore Josh Humphreys joining Kutler and Wood; seven wresters who have previously qualified for the NCAA Championships; and seven of 10 starters from last year's EIWA Tournament. Juniors Luke Karam (149) and Chris Weiler (184) are NCAA qualifiers from 2018, who return after missing out on the postseason last year.
Â
In the first official competition date for the 2019-20 season, 27 Mountain Hawks competed at the Princeton Open, Nov. 3 in Princeton, N.J. Lehigh's contingent included 22 attached wrestlers and five true freshmen competing unattached. Thirteen Mountain Hawks placed in the top six of their respective weight classes, led by sophomore Jaret Lane who claimed the title at 133. Senior Chase Gallik was a runner-up at 165.
Â
Action from the Journeymen Collegiate Classic is expected to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. Streaming video of the Journeymen Collegiate Classic will be provided by FloWrestling as part of its FloPro subscription service.
